Fr. Dominic Valanmanal (Malayalam: Fr. ഡോമിനിക് വാളമ്നാൽ) is a Roman Catholic priest from the Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Kanjirapally in India, known for his preaching and especially evangelization through television, radio, and other mediums. He was ordained as a priest in 1998[1]. He is the founder-director of the Marian Retreat Centre in Anakkara, Kerala, which is a part of the charismatic movement in the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church[2]. A major initiative by him is called the Krupabhishekam Convention, which is conducted all over the world among Malayali communities.
Krupabhishekam Conventions
Krupabhishekam Conventions are events where the Word of God is preached under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Dominic Valanmanal. These conventions are mainly organized in major towns and cities around the world and are reported to witness lakhs of participants. The main intention of these conventions is to make people aware of the power of the Word of God, the importance and the role of the Catholic Church, and the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Miracles are reported by many believers who attend these conventions. Multitudes of people come for healing and deliverance.
Controversies
Fr. Valanmanal said autistic people were like animals: "They lead an animal-like life. They copulate like animals. They bear children like animals. Therefore, those children will also be like animals. Animals do not speak, they do not have ears and can’t hear. It is not human."[3] This and other similar issues led to him being banned from Ireland and a diocese in Canada by Catholic bishops for his claims that certain mental, developmental, and psychological conditions are due to parental sin, contrary to scientific evidence. He also canceled a trip to Australia when such concerns were raised.[4] He also claims to have cured autism despite no medical evidence and the majority of autistic people not wanting to be cured.[4] After such restrictions in other countries, Fr. Valanmanal continued to hold events likely to harm autistic children in India.[5] He offered an apology for how people felt about his claims, but doubled down on these unproven claims; thus, this was called a "non-apology" by his critics.[5]
Personal life
Fr. Dominic Valanmanal was born in Koruthodu near Mundakayam in 1972[6]. He was ordained as a priest in the year 1998. He was appointed as a parish priest in a parish named Puttady in Idukki district. Later, he founded the Marian Retreat Centre at a nearby place called Anakkara.
