Francis Tan Huan Chun (born October 28, 1978) is an established Singaporean conductor and music educator. He currently serves as Music Director of the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Symphonic Band and Assistant Conductor of West Winds Singapore & NUS Wind Symphony.[1]
Education
Francis Tan graduated from the Australian National University with a degree in music in 2000 and received his postgraduate studies at Indiana University, where he studied with several notable instrumentalists and pedagogues including Steven Pratt, Douglas Stotter, Daniel Perantoni, Max Mcbride, and Steve Rosse. During his course of study, he received several notable distinctions in conducting.
He is currently an apprentice of Douglas Bostock.
Career
In Australia, Francis was invited to conduct the Canberra Community Orchestra as guest conductor for their regular season. Apart from serving as Music Director of the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Symphonic Band and Assistant Conductor of West Winds Singapore & NUS Wind Symphony in Singapore,[2] he was also invited to work with the Singapore Youth Wind Orchestra in their participation at the World Association of Symphonic Bands (WASBE) conference. He was the former music director of Riverside Secondary School Symphonic Band.
Francis is actively involved in the local band scene, working with dozens of young, budding musicians every year. He has conducted works by local composers such as Kelly Tang, Benjamin Yeo and Tan Yan Zhang. Apart from his conducting appointments, he is also a member of the Wind Bands Association of Singapore (WBAS) Executive Committee.[3]
Band Accolades
The Riverside Secondary School Symphonic Band (RSSB) participated in the Singapore International Band Festival in July 2010, winning a Silver Award in Division II. In 2013, the RSSB achieved a Certificate of Distinction in the Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging for Concert Bands.
The Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Symphonic Band & Wind Ensemble won Gold with Honours awards in the 2005, 2007 and 2009 Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging for Concert Bands. In 2011, both the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble participated in the Senior Category at the Hong Kong Winter Band Festival, attaining Silver and Gold (2nd Placing) respectively. The band also bagged the Gold Award in the Singapore International Band Festival in both 2012 and 2014.[4]
