Mustaf Salad (born November 1, 1990), better known by his stage name Shadow Wonder, is an American rapper, songwriter, and producer. With Egyptian and Somalian heritage, he is a first-generation American. Mustaf Hassan Salad, known as $hadow, was born on November 1, 1990, in Maryland. He lived there for several years before his family moved to Columbus, OH, where he spent most of his life. Shadow started rapping while attending Westerville Central High School and later graduated from Horizon Science Academy. He is currently a senior at Ohio State University.

Early Life

Mustaf Salad was born in Silver Spring, Maryland, but currently lives in Columbus, Ohio, where he has spent most of his life. He has always loved music; his father bought him a keyboard for his birthday and took him to see his uncle, "Hassan Aden Samatar," a traditional Somali poet and singer, perform in Columbus as a child. Mustaf also loved reading and performing spoken word, and his first rap song was a recipient at his tenth-grade poetry slam, leading him to pursue a career as a rapper.

Early Career

From the 10th to 12th grade, he was known by his nickname Shadow, which stemmed from his saying, "shadows still need light to shine." He created a Myspace music page that gained some popularity, even attracting the attention of Lil Mama and Young Berg. He also became known as a battle rapper and frequently participated in cyphers. While gaining recognition, he became too focused on his persona as $hadow. This led him to pause his rap career due to family issues for most of his early college years, dropping out of Ohio State University around 2011. He re-enrolled in 2015, reigniting his passion for spoken word and rap, and dedicated himself to improving his songwriting skills, culminating in the release of his second mixtape, "The 40 Thieves Code."
