Frank’s White Canvas is a Chilean alternative rock band formed in Santiago, Chile, in 2014 by Karin Aguilera (voice/guitar) and Francisca “Pancha” Torés (drums). Their first release was the single Intuition. on September 1st, 2014.

The band is known for their lyrics in English and themed such as veganism[1], sexual diversity[2], mental health (particularly panic attacks[3]) and interpersonal relationships in general.

In their official website, they define themselves as «a female duo from Chile born with the intention of creating music that delivers a raw and direct message to the public. The purpose of the band is to generate hope in people, and accompany them in their personal struggles. The past leaves scars, but a “white canvas” will always be available, a space where you can rewrite your history and draw a new path.»[4]

History[edit]

Both Karin and Francisca are from the Peñalolén commune in Santiago, Chile. They met in school during a school music band competition[5] where they worked together. After this experience, they become friends and discover their mutual perception of music and the bond it has to their lives. They form a band, initially with other members[6], but finally decide to become a duet, forming Frank’s White Canvas.

Musical influences[edit]

The duo presents influences from melodic pop to metal rock. Within their diverse influences, some stand out, such as My Chemical Romance, Placebo, Oasis, Alter Bridge [7] and David Bowie.

Because their influences and musical preferences, they start working with Dimitri Tikovoi in the production of their album My life, my canvas (2020).[8]

The white canvas[edit]

The name Frank's White Canvas comes from FRANK, an acronym of both founder's names.[9][10]

The concept of the white canvas is strongly present in the band’s creative process and the general concept that comprise the band’s songs. They establish the metaphor of having the option of being able to paint white on a canvas in order to be able to paint again, of always being able to have a new start, and of being able to color again with a new story the scenarios of our daily lives.[11][12][4]

Regarding the aesthetic elements of the band, there is a constant use of the colors red and purple, as well as black and white. The use of red and purple come from one end of the color wheel, while the use of black and white represent the duality between dark and light, or the canvas that can be painted again.

Personnel[edit]

Despite the band being a duo of drums and guitar, they have also used other instruments on many occasions, including bass, synthesizer, keyboard, and an accordion in the song Hector. This way they've developed a dynamic writing process, in which both members complement each other and don't limit themselves to their role or main instrument.

Despite being an independent band that does most of their work, they have assembled a work team throughout the years, which participates in each of their shows and tours. This team is made of Aron Aguilera (Marketing and video clip management), Carlos Hormazabal (Sound Engineer and FOH), Samuel Olate (lights) and Samuel Bustos (Stage Manager and Sequence Engineer).
