Franklin Clinton is a fictional character and one of three main protagonists from the Action-adventure game game Grand Theft Auto V[1][2][3][4][5] developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. Along with Michael De Santa and Trevor Philips,[6] he is a third-Person or First-person perspective[7] playable character appearing as one of the first characters the player can play as. Franklin also appears in Grand Theft Auto Online also as a playable character along with Lamar Davis in the Short Trips missions,[8][9][10][11][12] the Double Down Adversary Modes[13] and The Contract missions and update.[14][15][16][17] Franklin was played by actor Shawn Fonteno for the Voice acting and Motion capture.[18][19][20]

Franklin was born and lived his entire life in the city of Los Santos, he became a Gangster and "Gangbanger" at a young age and joined The Families gang with his best friend Lamar Davis, he and Lamar committed various small and petty Crimes for the gang. Franklins side of the story in Grand Theft Auto V revolves around him trying to become a more sophisticated criminal rather than committing small crimes with Lamar and working small jobs, he succeeds in trying to become a better criminal after he meets Michael De Santa, after meeting and getting to know Franklin more Michael becomes a mentor figure to Franklin teaching him how to be a better

criminal. Michael recruits Franklin in all of the Robberies and Jobs in the game after Franklin demonstrates that he has an adequate knowledge in being a criminal, later in the game Trevor Philips also becomes somewhat of a mentor for Franklin teaching him other things.

Franklin is featured and mentioned in Grand Theft Auto Online in various missions and updates, he is mentioned by Lamar in the missions "Mall or Nothing", "Community Outreach" and by a character named Hao recalling "Shift Work" during the Los Santos Car Meet introduction. He is later featured as a successful entrepreneur and multi-millionaire in the December 15 2021 update called "The Contract",[21][22] Franklin owns the F. Clinton and Partner agency with his new partner, the GTA Online Protagonist/player.

Character design[edit]

Rockstar Games.

Franklin was designed to be the young and ambitious character in the group, he was meant to play the role of the younger criminal who had potential and wanted to learn from the experienced criminals like Michael and Trevor. He was designed to be very different from the other two with a calmer attitude and not having a short temper.

Franklin received generally very positive reception from critics and fans of GTA V.

Dan Houser described Franklin saying "Franklin was the idea of this street hustler in the modern world where the glory days – if there ever were glory days of gang banging – had long since passed. When some of the illusions of this life have been shattered, what do you do now having been in that world? That seemed like an interesting character; a guy in his mid-to-late 20s who wants to move forward but doesn't really know how and is being held back by some of his more idiotic and dangerous friends."[23]

"The idea with Franklin was someone stepping outside their comfort zone and their normal way of doing things, because that way, even though they're still in their mid-20s or whatever, that hasn't worked. That world that they thought they'd be in and be able to make a success of has, thanks to the modern world or the changes in the economy or whatever it is, just failed. It doesn't really exist. They're now looking for something new. A new opportunity. They've gotten their qualifications and gotten all their experience and all they're good at is driving and robbing. How do actually go forward and who do you get to a kind of mentor you? That was a good contrast. The gang-banger in the post-gang-banging world."[23]

Franklin is based on the young gangsters and criminals from primarily the West Coast and South Los Angeles but he was given a unique personality very different from his fellow gang members and friends that made him stand out.

History[edit]

Background[edit]

Franklin was born in South Los Santos, San Andreas in 1988. Franklin never knew his father, he heard stories that his father was violent and physically abusive towards his mother, his father left while his mother was still pregnant with him and Franklin would end up never knowing him. Franklins mother was a Cocaine and Crack cocaine addict which was most likely caused by his fathers extreme abusive behaviour towards his mother, his mother's addiction eventually led to her having a Drug overdose and dying when Franklin was a little boy.

After his mothers death Franklin moved in with his maternal grandparents. He soon met his future friends Tonya Wiggins and JB Bradshaw (who is claimed by Tonya to be his cousin but Franklin denies it). Franklin was constantly spoiled by his grandmother but despite this Franklin decided to take on the role of a street hustler, Franklin started doing side hustles and jobs that he hid from his grandparents, one of the first jobs he did was selling Cigarettes with JB, Franklins grandfather found out about the job and "gave chase to both him and JB all around South Los Santos". After the death of Franklins grandparents, Franklin moved in with his aunt Denise Clinton in a house on forum drive which was left to them by Franklins grandmother in her will.

Franklin attended Davis high school with Lamar, Tanisha Jackson and Tonya. Franklin was expelled from high school for assaulting a teacher and soon turned to a life of being a Gangster and Drug dealer, Franklin started committing many small and petty crimes around this time like Carjackings and small Bank robberies with Lamar. Franklin and Lamar committed their first bank robbery while they were still teenagers, they stole $2,000 but could not keep it because a Dye pack exploded making the money worthless. Franklin later started working for a local drug dealer named Marcus, whom he later killed. In 2008 Franklin was caught for his crimes and was arrested and sent to Prison. After being released from prison Franklin decided to end his criminal life and start working legitimately.

Grand Theft Auto V[edit]

Franklin is introduced when he and Lamar are walking on the Santa Maria beach in the South Western part of Los Santos,[24] Lamar asks Michael who is sitting on a bench for directions to a specific house, Michael declines but changes his mind and tells Lamar where the house is. After Lamar thanks Michael for helping him the player is given the role of playing as Franklin. Franklin reveals in a phone call that a few months before the events of GTA V he started working for an Armenian business man named Simeon Yetarian, Simeon owns a Luxury Car dealership which he uses as a front for loansharking and extortion, he sells cars to people who can't afford them and when they default on the exorbitant interest payments, Franklin and Lamar repossess the cars as a part of the scheme.

Franklin is soon contacted by Simeon about new jobs that he can do including one that involves Franklin and Lamar going to Vagos gang controlled territory in Vespucci beach (South Los Santos) to repossess a Motorcycle, this job ends up getting Franklin and Lamar involved in a gang shootout against Vagos gang members. After this job Franklin is assigned a job to repossess a car from Michaels house that Jimmy De Santa, Michaels son, bought. Franklin gets into the car and as he is driving back to the dealership Michael comes out of the bottom where he was hiding, Franklin is forced to crash into Simeons dealership when Michael has him at gunpoint. Michael invites Franklin to get Beer together and talk about how "the whole world works", after Franklin is Fired by Simeon he goes to Michael for the beer he was offered. Franklin befriends Michael and they end up doing several things together while Michael acts as a mentor to him teaching things about being a smart and more careful criminal. When Michael finds his wife sleeping with her tennis coach, he and Franklin chase the coach to a mansion, which Michael destroys in anger. The owner of the mansion, drug lord Martin Madrazo, demands compensation. Michael returns to a life of crime to obtain the money, enlisting Franklin as an accomplice. With the help of Michael's old friend Lester Crest, a disabled hacker, they rob a jewellery store to pay off the debt. Meanwhile, Trevor, who lives in a trailer in Sandy Shores, hears of the heist and realises it was Michael's work; Trevor had believed the FIB killed Michael in the Ludendorff heist. Trevor finds Michael and reunites with him, forcing Michael to reluctantly accept him back into his life.

As time goes on, the protagonists' lives spiral out of control. Michael's criminal behaviour prompts his family to leave him. When he later becomes a movie producer, he comes into conflict with Devin Weston, a billionaire venture capitalist and corporate raider, who attempts to shut down Michael's studio. Michael thwarts his efforts and inadvertently kills his assistant, causing Devin to vow revenge. Meanwhile, Franklin must rescue his friend Lamar Davis from their former friend and rival gangster Harold "Stretch" Joseph, who attempts to kill them to prove himself to his new gang. Concurrently, Trevor tries to consolidate his control over various black markets in Blaine County, waging war against The Lost outlaw motorcycle club, Latin American street gangs, rival meth dealers, private military company Merryweather, and triad kingpin Wei Cheng.

Having broken his agreement with Dave by committing heists again, Michael is coerced by Dave and his superior, Steve Haines, to perform a series of operations alongside Franklin and Trevor to undermine the International Affairs Agency (IAA). Under Steve's direction and with Lester's help, they attack a convoy carrying funds for the IAA and steal an experimental chemical weapon from an IAA lab. As Steve comes under increasing scrutiny, he forces Michael and Franklin to erase evidence against him from the FIB servers. Michael takes the opportunity to wipe the data on his activities, destroying Steve's leverage over him. Franklin plays a key role in the FIB missions, helping Michael and

After reconciling with his family, Michael starts planning his final heist with Trevor, Franklin, and Lester: raiding the Union Depository's gold bullion reserve. However, Trevor discovers that Brad was not imprisoned as he was led to believe, but killed during the Ludendorff heist and buried in the grave marked for Michael. Deducing that the heist was a setup and that he was supposed to be killed in Brad's place, Trevor feels betrayed and leaves Michael for dead following a standoff with Cheng's henchmen. Although Franklin rescues Michael, Trevor's anger towards the latter causes friction within the group and threatens to undermine their plans. Meanwhile, Steve betrays Michael and Dave, and they become caught in a Mexican standoff between the FIB, the IAA, and Merryweather. Michael and Dave are rescued by Trevor, who decided to partake in the Union Depository heist and part ways with Michael afterwards.

The heist is successful, but Franklin is afterwards approached by Steve and Dave, who contend that Trevor is a liability, and Devin, who seeks revenge on Michael. Franklin has three options: kill Trevor, kill Michael, or attempt to save both in a suicide mission. Should Franklin choose to kill either Michael or Trevor, he ceases contact with the man he spares and returns to his old life.[25][26] Otherwise, the trio, aided by Lamar and Lester, withstands an onslaught from the FIB and Merryweather before going on to kill Cheng, Stretch, Steve, and Devin. Michael and Trevor reconcile, and the three protagonists cease working together but remain friends.[27][28]

Grand Theft Auto Online[edit]

The Contract[edit]

After the events of Grand Theft Auto V Franklin gained about 9 to 42 million dollars by robbing The Union Depository with Michael, Trevor, Lester and other heist crew members. After receiving the money from the heist Franklin invested in the stock marked and other businesses, he made more money and became a legitimate Businessman. Franklins new life is introduced in The Contract update, he is married to Tanisha and has several kids. In 2021 the protagonist or player of GTA Online and Franklin co-found a new business called "F. Clinton and Partner". The business is a "celebrity solutions agency" catering to the Vinewood elite and upper class people in need of "solutions to high-society problems". Franklin also invites Imani, the tech-savvy daughter of one of his old friends from Chamberlain Hills to work for the business, Franklin relents to Lamar imposing himself on their new partnership. Franklin still has his pet Dog Chop, now an elderly Rottweiler. One of the main missions the protagonist, Franklin and Lamar go on is helping one of their most important clients Dr. Dre, on the missions the protagonist has to recover Dr. Dre's stolen phone which has unreleased music on it.[29] There are also three storyline missions that revolve around Lamars new Cannabis business called "LD Organics",[30][9][10][11][12] the missions are called "Seed Capital", "Fire It Up" and "OG Kush".[31] Players can play as Lamar or Franklin and they have to investigate and protect Lamars business from rival gangs.[8]

The Contract: Double Down[edit]

The Contract update has an adversary mode called "Double Down" which was released 13 January, 2022. Players are put into two teams, these two teams are the "Hold Outs" and the "Attackers" The Hold Outs team's objective is to survive four minutes while staying in a single location. The Attackers' objective is to kill all of the Hold Outs. The main difference is that the Hold Outs team is limited to two players and they play as Franklin and Lamar.[32]
