Fred Chong (Chinese: 張捷惟, pinyin: Zhāng Jiéwéi; born in December 1973) is an award-winning media entertainment entrepreneur from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. He is also an establish songwriter, music producer and mufti-genre creator. He started Prodigee Media in year 2005 to focus on the emerging new media industry. By combining his experience in business, entertainment and new technology, he created new business models for the media entertainment industry, and became the pioneer to leverage on social media platforms.

Early Life[edit]

Chong graduated in Engineering Management from Canterbury University, New Zealand. He followed his passion in music and moved to Taiwan upon finishing his studies where he learned music producing from gurus like Jonathan Lee and George Leong; he has since worked with artistes like Grasshopper, Kelly Chen, Elva Hsiao, Panda Hsiung, Sheila Majid, Jacklyn Victor etc.  Chong first learned to combine his passion in music with technology by starting his first mobile ringtone company ‘Hipmobile’ in Singapore during the digital evolution of music industry in 2000. After being awarded ‘Asia’s Best Ringtone Producer’ by Nokia, his startup was acquired by the YTL Conglomerate in Malaysia where he became the youngest C.E.O of an YTL owned company in 2002.[1]

Career[edit]

Following his first experience in entrepreneurship, Chong started Prodigee Media in 2005 to focus on the emerging new media industry.  By combining his experience in business, entertainment and new technology, he created new business models for the media entertainment industry, including becoming the pioneer to leverage on social media platforms (Friendster, Facebook and YouTube). Chong worked closely with his online breakout talents including Karen Kong and Namewee to reach out to their community and continue to make his company relevant to the evolution of the global media entertainment business.

By using solely social media platforms for promotion, Chong created history when his company’s debut film “Nasi Lemak 2.0” directed by Namewee broke the local box office by grossing more than RM7,000,000 in 2011, making it one of the most successful 1Malaysia feature films in the country.  He continued to achieve box office success with ‘Hantu Gangster’ (2012), ‘Kara King’ (2013) and latest film ‘Banglasia’ (2014)  and gained international film festival recognition in New York, Osaka, Puchon, Taipei, Asia Pacific (Macau), Beijing and Singapore. As one of the more established companies in the region, Prodigee Media has won many accolades including Effie Award for Best Online Campaign (Sunsilk Campaign 2007), First SE Asia Online Concert (Karen Kong 2008), Best Music Album at the prestigious AIM (Karen Kong 2011), Dragons of Asia Best Integrated Marketing Campaign (Nasi Lemak 2012), Osaka Asian Film Festivals Best Talent (Namewee 2013), Best Movie Theme Song (Hantu Gangster 2014), YouTube Artiste of the Year (Namewee 2014), Dragons of Asia Best Marketing Discipline Campaign (Little Apple 2015), and many more.

Chong currently holds the position as Group C.E.O at Prodigee Media where he dedicates his time to focus on two key areas of his company, producing feature films for regional markets and growing his online media brand ‘WebTVAsia’ where he also manages his regional offices in Kuala Lumpur (HQ), Bangkok, Beijing, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Singapore, Taipei, and Tokyo. Today, ‘WebTVAsia’ is one of Asia’s fastest growing digital entertainment companies. With diversified businesses in digital media, film, talent, events, training and technology, WebTVAsia is one of Google YouTube’s biggest partner in Asia with more than 3500 channels surpasses 25 billion minutes watch time monthly and a combined reached of more than 600 million subscribers worldwide. Chong is also an award-winning filmmaker and musician with recognition both locally and international film festivals in New York, Taipei, Osaka, Busan and Beijing.  He advocates innovation and commercialization of intellectual properties as the key to success as a media entrepreneur and content creator. His biggest motivation is to lead WebTVAsia to become the leading digital entertainment company in Asia that connects audience, brands and content creators within one Asian ecosystem.

Chong is a frequent speaker in many international film, media and entertainment conferences including TEDX KL (Malaysia), APOS (Asia Pacific Operator Summit), TMT Finance Asia (Singapore), Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA) Summit 2018 (Hong Kong) , TechSauce (Thailand), Content Asia Summit (Singapore) and others - where he shares his views on how WebTVAsia can play a vital role in future of Asia digital entertainment landscapes.
