Freddy Fazbear is a fictional character and the titular antagonist of the Five Nights at Freddy's video game series. Created by American video game designer Scott Cawthon,[1] he is an animatronics possessed by the soul of a child that is the titular mascot of the Fazbear Entertainment Freddy Fazbear's Pizza franchise attempting to kill the night guard, who is also the player character. In the first game, he appears as the main antagonist, and then has supporting roles in the following games.

As the titular character, Freddy got multiple counterparts throughout the series. The original version of Freddy appeared or was at the very least mentioned in every entry in the franchise since his first appearance in the 2014 video game of the same name, and will also appear in the film adaptation of the original game.[2]

Five Nights at Freddy's series[edit]

Freddy Fazbear first appeared in Five Nights at Freddy's as the main antagonist, where he begins roaming Freddy Fazbear's Pizza on the third night, serving as the most difficult animatronic to avoid in the game. In the game, they were usually found in pairs.[3] Alongside him, there's a yellow variant called Golden Freddy, who causes the game to crash if encountered.[4] Freddy and Golden Freddy appear in Five Nights at Freddy's 2 as Withered Freddy and Withered Golden Freddy, broken down versions of himself that start moving on the third and sixth night respectively. Alongside them, two different versions of Freddy appear for the first time: Toy Freddy, the newer and safer variation of Freddy, and purple variant named Shadow Freddy, a mysterious recolour of Withered Golden Freddy.[5] Although Freddy, Golden Freddy and Toy Freddy are absent from the majority of Five Nights at Freddy's 3, Phantom Freddy appears as a green-colored hallucination when the ventilation system is restarted.[6] Additionally, Shadow Freddy returns as a villainous character, leading the original versions of Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy to their destruction at the hands of William Afton. A sharp-toothed dream version of Freddy named Nightmare Freddy appears in Five Nights at Freddy's 4. A more modern version of Freddy named Funtime Freddy is featured in Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location, voiced by Kellen Goff, with a Bonnie hand puppet named Bon-Bon attached to his arm and the remains of a deceased human child hidden inside of his body chassis.[7]

Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator features two versions of Freddy; a broken version of Ennard (who itself is partially made of Funtime Freddy) named Molten Freddy is featured in the second night of the game, and a purchasable support character animatronic named Rockstar Freddy.[8][9][10][11][12] Most versions of Freddy Fazbear from previous games in the series are featured in Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery, Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted, and/or Ultimate Custom Night, as well as seasonal variants for the former.[13]

Freddy Fazbear appears in the Five Nights at Freddy's novel series beginning with Five Nights at Freddy's: The Silver Eyes and The Twisted Ones, possessed by a vengeful spirit, and is mentioned in the third novel The Fourth Closet.[14] The spin-off series Fazbear Frights additionally features a series of normal Freddy Fazbear animatronics in addition to a series of smaller, more mobile versions of the animatronic named Lonely Freddys, who themselves then become possessed by several rogue A.I. and spirits.[15][16] The character will be featured in the film adaptation of the original game.[17][18]

Other appearances[edit]

Freddy Fazbear makes a cameo appearance in Fleeing the Complex in one of the endings, "Presumed Dead". After Henry flees from the alerted human guards to a murky building, Freddy appeared in the darkness with glowing eyes and mouth, playing the "Toreador March" theme music. If the player remains on the "Game Over" screen, the player will be jump-scared with an image of Freddy Fazbear and receive the medal "Spooked".[19] If the player enters "Freddy" into the search name box in the visual novel Emily Is Away, Freddy Fazbear's profile picture is enabled and Emily will quote the Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria advertisement slogan. Freddy Fazbear's face can be seen on a box after the green house boss in Bulb Boy, and on a neon billboard in Goosebumps HorrorTown.[20] Deltarune: Chapter 1 features a parody of Freddy named Ice-E Bear, who mentions Five Nights at Freddy's antagonist "Purple Guy". In Mortal Kombat X, Tremor's special brutality "It's Me Tremor", which turns the other fighter into a statue of gold, is in reference to Golden Freddy and their "It's me" catchphrase. Golden Freddy is additionally referenced in the DLC The Ghost Survivors for the Resident Evil 2 remake. The fifth issue of the Steven Universe comic series features a plush Freddy Fazbear in a cameo appearance.

After teasing a promotional campaign in November 2016,[21] the fast food restaurant chain Arby's debuted a Five Nights at Freddy's-themed advertisement featuring Freddy Fazbear in October 2019.[22] In January 2018, Dead by Daylight developer expressed interest in featuring Freddy Fazbear as downloadable content in a future version of the game.[23] The Nickelodeon-Netflix animated series Glitch Techs second season episode "Ralphie Bear Is Back" serves as a parody of the Five Nights at Freddy's series, the titular Ralphie Bear being voiced by Dan Milano.[24]

Merchandising[edit]

Five Nights at Freddy's merchandise based around the Freddy Fazbear animatronic and their variants are primarily produced by two companies: Sanshee and Funko.[25] The line includes stuffed toys, action figures, posters, clothing, keychains, and stationery.[26][27] McFarlane Toys also has a line of merchandise consisting of construction sets,[28] which Todd McFarlane called "the single largest selling product, bar none, by a lot that [he's] done in 20-plus years."[29] The merchandise, available internationally, has been a factor in the overall franchise's success.[30]

Reception[edit]

Since the release of Five Nights at Freddy's in August 2014, Freddy has become one of its most popular characters, with several memes being made about them. In September 2020, a meme featuring Jack Black dancing to the character's Funtime Freddy theme music from Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted went viral on the social media platform TikTok,[31] Black having previously positively reviewed the Five Nights at Freddy's series as well as the Freddy Fazbear episode on an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! in April 2020 whilst wearing a mask headpiece based on William Afton.[32] Scott Cawthon has cited the creation of the Freddy Fazbear character and the Five Nights at Freddy's video game series as a whole to initial negative reviews towards his previous game, a construction and management game Chipper & Sons Lumber Co.. describing the game's characters as "unsettling" and "animatronic-like in appearance" inspired him to repurpose the game's character designs towards making a horror-focused game centered around the Freddy Fazbear character.[33][34]
