Frederick Charles "Charlie" Fripp is a South African Editor-in-Chief, journalist, photographer, entertainment, and technology writer.[1][2][3][4] He currently[citation needed] serves as Editor-in-Chief for Opera Software's AI-driven news application, Opera News, in South Africa.[citation needed]
Journalism career
Fripp began his journalism career as a motoring journalist for The Lowvelder in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga in 2006. Relocating to Johannesburg, he then took a position as a general journalist for The Fourways Review. While there, two of his photographs were contenders for a Caxton Excellence Award (2007) in the category Best Feature Photograph.[5]
While at Caxton Newspapers, he was also appointed chief photographer for Get It magazine, and in 2008 he returned to journalism for The Randburg Sun.[citation needed]
In early 2009, he began writing entertainment news and reviews for the now-defunct EntertainmentAfrica.com. A portion of his content for Entertainment Africa was later repurposed for sister website iAfrica.com.[6]
Besides being appointed Consumer Tech Editor for several publications, he also worked as a freelance video game reviewer for the free South African online video game magazine Gamecca, and was News Editor for htxt.africa, a technology news website published by Hypertext Media.
Afterward, he served as Managing Editor and eSports journalist for a pan-African television and broadcasting company, and also contributed to eSports for ESPN Africa.
He has also written numerous articles for the Canadian-based website AskMen.com, offering South African perspectives on global events, including pieces on South African sprinter and convicted killer Oscar Pistorius[7] and the death of Nelson Mandela.[8]
Fripp has appeared on numerous television segments about technology, such as eNews Africa and Good Morning Africa, and regularly comments on technology for radio station SAfm. He also makes regular appearances on the Dstv channel ED's Edge technology show.
