Joseph is the sole creator of the largest GoFundMe campaign in history, the #BlackPantherChallenge, which ultimately raised over $950K and allowed more than 75,000 children worldwide to see Black Panther. In 2018 he was honored in Forbes Under 30 list for Marketing and Advertising. Joseph is also the winner of the 2018 Comic-Con Humanitarian of the Year award and was named one of the most influential African Americans in 2018 by The Root. He has also written for the Huffington Post, USA Today, and New York Times about marketing, race, and representation.
Early life, education, and career
Joseph was born and raised in Yonkers, New York. He attended Hunter College, where he earned a BA in Political Science and went on to obtain an MBA New York University. Joseph’s career in marketing has spanned across private, public, and nonprofit sectors, including consulting on major marketing campaigns for fortune 100 companies as well as the world’s largest nongovernmental organizations. In 2018 Frederick Joseph launched his marketing agency We Have Stories. We Have Stories promotes inclusion and representation in media and takes on clients that aim to diversify story telling in media and the arts.
Black Panther Challenge After raising over $50,000 on GoFundMe to take Harlem children to see Black Panther in theaters, Frederick Joseph launched the #BlackPantherChallenge, which became the largest GoFundMe in history. He called on others to start a GoFundMe in their community to take more kids to watch Black Panther in the theater. Thousands of people donated to a GoFundMe, created a campaign in their community, or shared the #blackpantherchallenge online. Over 500 GoFundMe's raised over $950,000, helping to send thousands of kids see the movie. Donations came in from all 50 states and 50 countries around the world.
Redskins/Caucasian social experiment In August of 2018 Frederick Joseph conducted a social experiment in New York that received a lot of press. He wore a t-shirt that resembled ones worn by fans of Washington D.C.’s NFL team, but his didn’t feature the image of a Native American or the word “Redskins,” instead it depicted a white man’s face above the word “Caucasians.” Joseph received racist remarks in the street followed by death threats and slander on social media. This caught the attention of numerous news outlets and the story was written about in The Washington Post, Huffington Post, Newsweek, USA today, The Source, and Yahoo Sports, amongst others.
