FreeRDP is a free, open source client implementation of the proprietary RDP protocol[8][9][10] based on the Microsoft Open Specifications.[11] It is released under the Apache License[7] and available for Linux, OS X, Microsoft Windows,[5] OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD and Solaris.[4] Since 2013 there are also Android and iOS ports available under the names aFreeRDP and iFreeRDP, respectively.[6]

FreeRDP was forked in 2009 from rdesktop.[3]

    Features[edit]

As of December 2015, FreeRDP implements a large subset of the RDP 7.0 protocol as well as some of the new features of RDP 8,[12][13] including:

    • RemoteFX
    • RemoteApp
    • Clipboard redirection
    • Multimedia redirection
    • Disk redirection
    • Parallel port redirection
    • Serial port redirection
    • Printer redirection
    • Smart card redirection
    • Sound redirection
    • Network Level Authentication (NLA)
    • Desktop Composition
    • Remote Desktop Gateway
    • Multi-touch input support
    • USB redirection

    Use[edit]

FreeRDP can be used as an alternative to the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for connections to a graphical console of a Remote Desktop Server via the Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol. FreeRDP's command line syntax is based on the native Microsoft RD Connection Client syntax. It also can process .rdp connection files created by the Microsoft RD Connection Client.[13]

Furthermore it is the first remote desktop backend of Weston, the reference compositor of Wayland.[14]

FreeRDP is provided as linkable libraries but is also included in a number of dedicated RDP clients and remote desktop solutions.[citation needed]

    License[edit]

The FreeRDP project moved from using GPLv2 to Apache License 2.0 between versions 0.x and 1.x.[7]
