The French American Academy, is an independent bilingual French American school for students from PreK2 to 8th grade with three locations in New Jersey : Jersey City, Hoboken and Englewood. In the USA, the school is accredited by the Middle State Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools and a member of the New Jersey State Association of Independent Schools. In France, the French American Academy is accredited by the French Ministry of Education and belongs to the AEFE network.

The French American Academy offers a bilingual curriculum taught by native French and American certified teachers.  The school has over 300 students. The student to teacher ratio is approximately 8:1.[citation needed]

The French American Academy's graduates can attend national high schools such as The Lycée Francais de New York or Mc Nair High School, Bergen Academies, but also High Tech, St Peter's Prep, St Dominics, or other public high schools in Hudson and Bergen counties or in France.[citation needed]

History[edit]

The French Academy of Bergen County was established in February 2007 with its first open-house on July, 14th 2007.

  • September 2007 - The French American Academy opens in a building at St. Mary’s, in Dumont, NJ, under the name, The French Academy of Bergen County (FABC). There are 25 children attending the after school program with one day of immersion in French for younger attendees.
  • September 2008 - The Academy offers Preschool and Kindergarten classes with school opening full time.
  • April 2009 - The French American Academy receives its accreditation from the Middle States Association on Elementary schools.
  • June 2009 - 54 children are registered in both after school programs and full time school.
  • September 2009 - The French American Academy opens its first, first grade class.
  • June 2010 - The French American Academy relocates in New Milford
  • September 2010 - A second campus opens in Morris Plains, NJ and the school is renamed The French Academy of Bilingual Culture
  • 2012 - The French American Academy opens a third campus in Jersey City
  • September 2013 - The French Academy of Bilingual Culture is renamed The French American Academy
  • September 2016 - Opening of 6th grade, first step into Middle School.
  • September 2018 - Relocation of the Morris Plains campus and faculty to New Milford. At the same time, the Middle School from New Milford is relocated to Jersey City.
  • July 2021 - Relocation of the New Milford campus in Englewood.
  • January 2022 - Announcement of 2 new campus openings in Hoboken, NJ and Tulsa, OK

Curriculum[edit]

The Curriculum of The French American Academy follows the academic program defined by the Ministry of National Education in France. It also adds American curriculum requirements in Language Arts, Social Studies and Maths. The full curriculum is taught in 2 languages, emphasising on bilingualism and French immersion. The school focuses on project-based pedagogy to deliver its curriculum.

Jersey City Campus[edit]

Located 209 3rd Street, Jersey City, NJ 07302, the campus has 3 floors, 23 classrooms, a library and a gymnasium. The campus serves students from Pre-K2 through 8th grade

Hoboken Campus[edit]

Located 360 1st Street, Hoboken, NJ, 07030, the campus opens ss of September 2022. It serves students from Pre-K2 through Pre-K4.
