Janelle Kao (born in San Diego, CA)[1] more commonly known by her online alias, Freya Fox, is a Filipino Vietnamese Chinese American Actress, TV Personality, eSports competitor, DJ, Producer, TikTok Managed Creator,[2] EDM singer,[3][4] and internet personality.[5]
Kao has garnered over 32,000 followers on Facebook Gaming's platform,[6] and was one of the first Facebook Gaming partners signed on June 1, 2018.
Kao is the first American ambassador for headphones company 1MORE[7] alongside Asian market ambassador Jay Chou[8] In September 2018, she was also nominated as one of San Diego's most inspiring stories by SD Voyager Magazine[9]
At CES 2018, Freya made her live event streaming debut and was interviewed by Chinese Media companies regarding what its like to wear VR headphones.[10]
In 2021, Freya Fox was revealed as the voice and character design of Unicorn Girl in the battle royale Fortnite.[11]
Early Life[edit]
In 2006, Freya got her start in content creation as a Youtuber and Xanga personality. She started a clothing line and funded her content creation by selling clothes and utilizing early Influencers such as AJ Rafael, Shiny, and other Myspace artists.[12] In 2008, Freya was signed to Fullscreen Inc. as a gamer and tech reviewer as a part of the YouTube partner program while attending National University in San Diego.
Video Game Streaming & Esports[edit]
Freya had streamed on Facebook since January 2018 during the launch of Facebook's new gaming platform. Before then she had gotten her start on Twitch several years before but failed to gain any traction.[13] Eventually, Freya became one of the first Facebook Gaming Partners in early 2018.[12]
On June 12, 2018, Freya collaborated with 1MORE alongside LosPollosTV and Becca at E3 2018 to launch a brand new VR Gaming Headset.[14]
On September 1, 2018, she collaborated with Square Enix in a live stream stage segment promotion of Kingdom Hearts III at Pax West 2018 in Seattle, Washington. Additionally, Freya worked with The Quiet Man at PAX West 2018 an unreleased game by Square Enix. On the same day, Freya, Thinnd, and Xbit Gaming collaborated with Bandai Namco in a live stream segment to promote Soul Calibur VI by demonstrating an early release build from the developers. Both streams appeared on the Facebook Gaming stage on the convention floor. Thinnd acted as the ring announcer in a 1 vs. 1 fighting game contest of best of seven wins.[15]
On September 13, 2018, SD Voyage Magazine named her as one of the most inspiring stories of San Diego.[16]
In 2019, Freya teamed up with Facebook Gaming and International Women's Day to promote Women in gaming. She took a unique stance on bringing attention to queer women and making a call to action to end transphobia against transgender women. The stream garnered over 1 million views and reached over 3 million people across Facebook.[17]
In May 2020 Fox partnered with the American Cancer Society for Gamers vs Cancer for a fundraising stream. The stream was broadcast on Twitch and Facebook, as well as being featured on Cancer.org[18][19]
In August 2023, Fox was a featured gaming ambassador of Cox Business. She appeared in their marketing material for Cox Fiber which launched in Nevada that same month.[20]
Fighting Game Championships[edit]
On September 1, 2018, she won the Facebook Gaming Unified Fighting Game Championship at PAX West 2018 by beating Captain Xbit at Soul Calibur VI. Bandai Namco announced her as the winner of the championship via social media and she hinted a rematch at Evo 2018.[15][21][17]
Facebook Controversy and Twitch Streaming[edit]
In December 2020, entertainment news site Looper reported that Kao had suffered the consequences of ending a Facebook Gaming partnership on bad terms, which resulted in the loss of her 10 Year old Facebook Account which included messages from now deceased family members.[22]
In 2021, Kao officially moved to Twitch to stream gaming and music content.[23]
In 2022, Kao's Tiktok video went viral, amassing over 600,000 views in a few days after recreating the Will Smith slap in WWE 2k22.[24]
Television and Movie Career[edit]
In July 2021, Kao was signed to DeFiance Media as a host of her self-titled Freya Fox Crypto & Finance show which focuses on crypto and gaming in relationship to real world finance.[25]

In December 2021, Kao as Freya Fox was cast to star in the Netflix show Light the Night.[27][28]
In December 2022, Kao as Freya Fox is rumored to appear on Bling Empire Season 4 or Bling Empire New York after images of her and Kim Lee together circulated online and via Getty Images.[29]
In August 2023, Kao was announced to appear as a character in the hoax TikTok film "Zepotha". Zepotha, which originally started out as a hoax horror movie, was picked up by a major movie studio and is in development. The film starring Kao is slated for 2024.[citation needed]
Music Career[edit]
In 2016, Kao released a cover of Eric Chou's "How Have You Been (Ni Hao Bu Hao)", the song charted on KKBox's Mandarin Charts that year.[citation needed]
In April 2022, Kao released her first EP entitled "Lo Fi Asia", a Lo-Fi Hip Hop EP across all streaming platforms. The EP reached over 10 million streams within the same month across Asian streaming platforms KKBox and QQ Music.[30]
In September 2022, Kao co-headlined Life is Beautiful festival on the Kicker Stage with comedian Joel Kim Booster playing an EDM DJ set.[citation needed] Life is Beautiful made the last-minute announcement on their Instagram that they had added Kao along with Atsuko, Andrew Lopez, and EDM Producer/DJ Emitt Fenn[31]
In October 2022, LA3C & Penske Media announced Freya Fox would play at the inaugural production of the brand-new festival. Kao as Freya Fox joined Snoop Dogg, Megan Thee Stallion, Maluma, Seventeen, DJ Peach, DJ Accia, Lolo, Cam Girl, and DJ Mustard amongst other artists.[32][33][34]
On December 10, 2022 Fox performed at the Hot Import Nights stage at LA3C to a packed crowd alongside Kim Lee, Tokimonsta and DJ Mustard.[35][36][37] Fox performed right after Kpop group SEVENTEEN's set was concluding, resulting in over 1,000 carats funneling into catch Fox performing her Clarity cover/remix. A clip of the performance went viral on Tiktok.[38]
On June 9, 2023 Fox won Haliene's Open AUX DJ Competition to open for Haliene at The Fonda Theater for her Divine Experience Tour. Fox was personally selected by Haliene and joined DJ Kaidro and LIONE as part of the show on June 16, 2023.[39][40]
Personal Life[edit]
Kao is openly lesbian and has spoken out about LGBT representation in gaming.
In 2021, Kao admitted to Wired Magazine that she is an avid DVD and Blue-Ray collector and gave her analysis on why DVDs and physical media still exists in 2021.[23][41]
Kao is known to support Taiwan's recognition as an independent country. In May 2021, Kao tweeted a meme of professional wrestler John Cena dubbed as John Xina as a result of Cena's apology to China regarding recognizing Taiwan. Kao's commentary was added to Taiwan News photo of the day, showcasing her support for Taiwan.[42]
Kao is known to be a proponent of a sober lifestyle and gave up alcohol at age 25.[43]
