Frisk is the protagonist and player character in Undertale. They set out on a quest to return to the surface after Frisk falls into the Underground. After ascending Mount Ebott, Frisk is the eighth (and last) human to fall into the Underground. The character we see in the first cinematic of the game is not Frisk, but the first human that fell down. This is discovered when Frisk's name is revealed in the True Pacifist Route.
Profile
Appearance
Frisk is a young human child dressed in a magenta-striped blue sweater, blue shorts or pants, and brown shoes. Much like the First Human and Kris, Deltarune's main protagonist, Frisk has no gender, and characters only refer to them using "they/them" pronouns. Their blank face is constant in the overworld, but they are said to make different expressions, especially during fights. They have short/medium-length brown hair with messy, short bangs. On their sprite, their skin is yellow, but this is likely a design element to keep Frisk’s ethnicity ambiguous.
Personality
Not much is known about Frisk’s personality, making it easy for the player to imbue them with any personality. However, based on their actions, the narration explaining Frisk's behavior varies. The best example of this is when hitting Mad Dummy in Waterfall. If you beat them up: At LV1: *( You tap the dummy lightly. ) (You feel bad.) Up to LV 8: *(You punch the dummy at full force.) (Feels good.) LV8+ : *(You sack the dummy.) (Who cares?). Frisk is also shown to sometimes ask questions of other characters. Those questions are never explicitly shown and are replaced by “...” to show that Frisk is talking. What they said can usually be deduced by how other characters answer.
So, in short, since Frisk is controlled by the player almost all the time, very little is known about their personality and morals; however, a few details can nonetheless be captured:
- Frisk seems to enjoy rather childish jokes, but not puns:
- After making a pun in the ruins, Toriel pauses and says, “Well, I thought that was funny.”, showing that Frisk did not laugh at the joke.
- However, Frisk appears to have found Sans's whoopee cushion joke funny, given that in Genocide, Sans notes that Frisk did not laugh this time around, implying that they had laughed in Neutral/Pacifist routes.
- Frisk does not like soda:
- During the meeting with Undyne, it is possible to select the yellow soda that the latter offers to the human. However, if so, Undyne will notice that although "Frisk" chose the soda, it shows on their face that they do not want any. This also shows that Frisk is not free to choose as they please, and that the player controls their choices.
- Frisk might be afraid of Mettaton/robots, because during the first two fights against Mettaton (in his first form) the only options beside “check” are "cry" and "burn" respectively.
- Frisk also appears to be extremely scared in the True Lab. In the bathroom where the Amalgam is located behind the shower curtain, Frisk walks very slowly, not wanting to go but being forced to do so by the player.
- Frisk has, however, acted without the player's input several times:
- In Sans and Papyrus' house, after the Annoying Dog runs away from the giant sink, Papyrus tells Frisk to "catch that meddling canine!", which the human does, without us being in control.
- On the Neutral Route, Frisk takes a step forward to challenge Photoshop Flowey, again without the player doing anything, showing some courage on their part.
Frisk is a child who, despite their disinterest in the toys at Toriel's house, likes to play (with dead leaves in the ruins, for example) and who seems curious, despite their silent nature, asking questions from time to time to certain characters.
