FRONTRUNNER is an American publication covering art, film, music, culture and design; with print and digital publications.

History[edit]

FRONTRUNNER Magazine was founded in 2009, originating from the Frontrunner Collective art space based in Tribeca, New York City. In 2016, its main offices were relocated to Red Hook in Brooklyn. From 2010 to 2012, FRONTRUNNER launched a gallery project space at 59 Franklin Street in New York City hosting multiple art exhibitions, live music concerts, film screenings, and creative meet-ups.[1] In 2016, FRONTRUNNER produced an art fair called An Annual AfFair in The West Chelsea Arts building, described as “a D-I-Y alternative to New York’s Frieze” by Artnet Magazine[2]. The fair was hosted again in 2017, which showcased young artists and continued its support of emerging artists including Sophia Narrett, Ajani Russell, and Guno Park, among others.

The magazine expanded its editorial section to London in 2016. That same year, the magazine produced its first print quarterly print edition, in a print-on-demand format. In 2018, FRONTRUNNER named Shana Beth Mason[3], a London-based art critic/journalist and the magazine’s Art section editor, as its Editor-In-Chief. The magazine’s editorial reach expanded further to include interviews with European artists, filmmakers, digital creators and designers. One-third of its coverage is focused in Italy, where Mason is a member of the Nobile Contrada dell’Aquila based in Siena (Tuscany).

FRONTRUNNER was described by Feedspot as one of the Top “Art Magazines & Publications” of 2023[4]

EVENTS[edit]

FRONTRUNNER hosts events throughout the year, including art events at The West Chelsea Arts Building and a limited edition zine project that is dropped at art openings domestically and internationally. One of these was the zine by artist Andrew Brischler. "In March 2020, I was asked by Frontrunner Magazine to create a small zine to be offered for free at Gavlak Gallery’s booth at The Armory Show. Aside from the size and page count, I was given free rein as to the imagery, layout, and design of the zine. What I ended up with was a collection of inspirations, studio shots, and close up images of finished works. The project was so unexpectedly generative for me that I knew whenever I had my next show I would create something similar."[5]
