GAM Records is a Belgian record label started in Brussels in 1991 by record store owner Anne-Marie Prins, and her husband Jean-Pierre.
History[edit]
GAM Records, created in 1991, is an independent label dedicated to the production of modern jazz, and original interpretations of classical compositions.
Starting in the 1930s, three generations of the Prins family have been involved with production and marketing of Jazz and art music recordings. One of the earliest and most important came in the 1940s. When he was 10 years old, Jean-Pierre Prins was in the studio and witnessed the recording of a Django Reinhardt album, produced by his father Ward (Prins), the only recordings of Django playing violin..[1], and a version of his famous composition "Nuages" with the Stan Brenders Big Band. In 1991, Jean-Pierre Prins and his wife Anne-Marie Prins, who owned the renowned record store MUSIC INN in Brussels, continued the long tradition by launching GAM Records, a label dedicated to jazz and classical music. Jeanfrançois Prins (their son), a Jazz guitarist dividing his time between Berlin and New York City, was appointed as A&R director for GAM. GAM Records of which Toots (musician Toots Thielemans) is the Godfather of sorts[2] In 2001, journalist Emmanuel Holander said about Jean-Pierre Gebler's album "Meggie" (GAM 917): "Do yourself a favor, listen, it's Belgian and it's at the same level of very good American jazz"[3] Jeanfrançois Prins moved back to Belgium in 2016, and became the CEO of GAM Records in 2017.
