Gabriel dos Passos Gomes is a Brazilian chemical engineer who studies the use of artificial intelligence in organic chemistry. He is an assistant professor of chemistry and chemical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University.

Early life and education

Gabriel Gomes grew up in Magé, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.[1] In 2008, as an undergraduate student, Gomes began working with his professor on computational organic chemistry.[2]

Gomes continued his education at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro,[3] where he obtained his B.Sc. in Chemistry in 2013 under the mentorship of Pierre Mothè Esteves.[4] He spent one year in an academic exchange at University of Lisbon, Portugal with Maria José Lourenço.[4] Then, in 2016 he earned his M.Sc. and in 2018, under the mentorship of Igor V. Alabugin, he earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Florida State University.[5][6]

Career

Gomes is an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University in chemistry and chemical engineering.[7] His research merges machine learning with organic chemistry to innovate in chemical reactions, catalysts, and materials.[4] Before joining Carnegie Mellon University, Gomes was awarded the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship to continue his research on catalysts and artificial intelligence while working with Alán Aspuru-Guzik at the University of Toronto.[4][6] During his time at Florida State University, his research centered on the relationship between molecular structure and reactivity.[3] He conducted research in Portugal at the University of Lisbon on reduced graphene oxides.[4] Gomes was named to Chemical & Engineering News' Talented Twelve in 2022, where he discussed his research on merging Artificial Intelligence and chemistry.[3][6]

Research

Gomes runs his own lab where he focuses on the development of catalyst design. His research aims to train computers with the ability to create catalysts and structures from scratch.[3]

Gomes' group developed a software system called "Coscientist", where a non-organic intelligent system designed, planned, and executed a chemistry experiment.[8] The system uses large language models (LLMs), including OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Anthropic Claude, to execute the full range of the experimental process with a simple, plain language prompt.[9][8][10][7]

Awards

In 2018 Gomes received the American Chemistry Society's COMP Chemical Computing Group Excellence Award.[11] In 2020, for his work at the University of Toronto, Gomes was awarded the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship for his project "Designing Catalysts with Artificial Intelligence".[12]
