Jean Marcel R. Gallo (São Paulo, April 29 1981) is a Brazilian chemist and Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Federal University of São Carlos in Brazil. His research interests lie in the design of heterogeneous catalysts seeking to controlling the catalyst sites at an atomic level, as well as the structure at the nanometric scale aiming tackling relevant problems associated to the refinery and the biorefinery.[1] He has served as Guest Professor at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena in Germany (2017–2018)[2] and Visiting Professor at the University of Eastern Piedmont in Italy.

Education[edit]

He has received his undergraduate and master's degrees in chemistry at the State University of Campinas. His PhD was performed in a cotutelle program between the State University of Campinas and the University of Eastern Piedmont.[3]

Career[edit]

In 2010, Gallo joined the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a research associate in Prof. James A. Dumesic Group. In 2014 he is hired as Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Federal University of São Carlos, establishing the Group of Renewable Energy, Nanotechnology, and Catalysis (GreenCat).[1]

In 2016, Gallo receives the FAPESP Young Investigator Award to perform research in the design of heterogeneous catalysts for the conversion of biomass-derived monosaccharides.Due to his work in this field, he was honored with the Research in Catalysis Award (2017) by the Brazilian Society of Catalysis[4] and the American Chemical Society I&EC Research's 2021 Class of Influential Researchers.[5]

Gallo has served as Guest Editor for several journal, such as ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, Molecular Catalysis, Journal of Molecular Catalysis A: General, Catalysis Today, Processes, and Frontiers in Chemistry. He is also member of the Early Career Board of the ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering.
