He has a master's degree in ecology from the University of São Paulo (USP),[2] was director of Science and Technology at the National Association of Postgraduates (ANPG)[3][4] and the APG-ESALQ.[5] Colombo is a militant in the cause of housing and land socialization[6][7][8] and is currently the youngest candidate for the São Paulo state government for the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB).[9][10]
Biography[edit]
Origins[edit]
Gabriel Colombo was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1990, but moved with his family to Durandé, in Minas Gerais.[11] Son of the owner of a small snack bar in the center of the small town of almost 8,000 inhabitants[12] and a housewife, her family's income depended on the flow of pensioners who went downtown to withdraw their salaries and students from the town's only school. Due to the opening of new schools and bank branches in the rural area, the snack bar's income gradually decreased. In search of work, the family then moved to Viçosa, still in the interior of Minas Gerais, and then to Atibaia, in the state of São Paulo.[11]
In 2009 he entered the Agronomy Engineering course at the School of Agriculture of the University of São Paulo (Esalq/USP) in Piracicaba, the city where he currently resides.[8][13] Interested in environmental issues, he started an internship at one of the largest organic and horticultural farms in Brazil. It was there that he began to observe the problems of labor exploitation.[11]
Career and political militancy[edit]
With the outbreak of the protests of June 2013 and the birth of his son the following year, Colombo became increasingly politicized. Until then, he had tried to gain political and organizational meaning by participating in social movements and the student movement in his area, studying and working with agroecology and rural extension.[14][15] Feeling the need for a classist perspective in his work, Colombo began studying Marxism and in 2015 joined the ranks of the PCB, helping to rebuild the Party cell in his city.[14] His research for his master's degree revealed that only 6.7% of the quilombola territories in Brazil have land titles.[16][17]
