Gadam (born July 11,1975) is an artist, author, filmmaker and musician best known for a series of mumblecore features between 1995 and 2020.[1] His work has been put out under a number of pseudonyms (Keanu Clinger, Gabriel Maitreya, Gabriel Manwaring). His film and video work is most often an experimental pastiche of outmoded genres with idiosyncratic details, and is often made with consumer-grade equipment - though some of the titles made with this lo-fi approach have received commercial distribution. LIVE ASHES was the fifth and final release from a series of feature-length variations on an adaptation of Shakespeare's MEASURE FOR MEASURE, which was made with two casts of actors who were each shot individually in front of greenscreens to be edited into scenes, where the source text is used as a framing device for apocryphal scenes shot with actors on his previous films over the previous 25 years. The premiere was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was released online in 2021. LIVE ASHES is presented as his final mumblecore feature.

Biography[edit]

Gadam (stylized GADAM) was born Gerald Vernon Clinger in Greencastle, IN. With the help of a progressive high school media program, he had made three guerilla features on his own in his teens before attending film school.[2] He briefly attended Columbia College Hollywood, but left after less than two years to complete an experimental feature he had started making with people he had met there. While his works would receive positive reviews and limited attention, he did not begin to see any degree of success until his 2005 horror/comedy SHADE AND SHADOW [3]and 2010's BLOODLUST allowed him to make film his primary creative focus, He is married to his partner (since 2009) and they do not have children. He has seldom given interviews and usually opts to identify himself onscreen with his logo.

Career[edit]

His work first found a small following in the 1990s when his early features were sent to local cable-access stations across America. While these titles were never given a proper commercial release, this trilogy of early works -along with a collection of shorts - was released on DVD in 2005. These titles were largely shot and edited on video, and the original masters had been lost - so the quality was very poor even when remastered for DVD. His first feature to garner any significant critical notice was SHADE AND SHADOW[4], while BLOODLUST[5] became his first commercially successful film project. Spending several years on an evolving Shakespeare project, he was hired for a number of small commercial projects - music videos, web series, etc - thought he only one to bear his name is DANGER FALLS[6] , a pilot for a series that was a surreal take on the western genre. The series would be changed to feature many of the same actors but no longer be a western, though the pilot was released on DVD and VOD two years later and became one of his most commercially successful titles. In 2012, he began working on M4M:MEASURE FOR MEASURE[7] - an experimental Shakespeare project which would ultimately take over 8 years and produce 5 features. The final version, LIVE ASHES[8] , incorporates material shot alongside his other projects over two decades and uses it as a framing device for what is presented as his final mumblecore feature. The 2020 premiere of LIVE ASHES was set to mark 25 years since the release of his first feature-length title and serve as a segue to his first studio production, which had been in development for almost 4 years and is currently slated to begin production in fall 2021.

Select works[edit]

  • DOGMA[9] (1995) - Shot in 1993 and first shown on Halloween 1993, this comedy was the second part of his first trilogy of guerilla features. It gained notice for its use of prerecorded narration by author William S Burroughs actor River Phoenix, who died the night it was first screened and by those curious about any possible connections it might have had to the Kevin Smith film of the same name. The version later aired on cable access is dedicated to the late actor.
  • SHADE AND SHADOW (2005) - A horror/comedy about buried secrets. The director's first all-digital feature, it was made to appear as distressed film- as if someone had unearthed and old and forgotten story. While only receiving minor attention in America, the DVD sold better in Europe (despite region coding, no supplemental materials and the movie not providing subtitles or dubbing of any kind.)
  • BLOODLUST (2010) - An amateur cage fighter begins to explore his sexuality and its connection to violence before falling victim to an internet predator. A special edition DVD release in 2012 cited the title as the first gay 3D feature[10] by his then label, TLA.
  • DANGER FALLS (2012) - The son of a wealthy railroad tycoon is kidnapped by two people, both named Adam, and held for ransom. Law enforcement, bounty hunters and the boyfriend who betrayed him then attempt to track him down. Intended as a pilot for a series, the narrative is very open ended.
  • LIVE ASHES (2020) - His fifth and final variation on Shakespeare's MEASURE FOR MEASURE, this time using two casts of actors and using the play as a framing device to contextualize material shot concurrent with his other projects over the previous two decades. Two casts perform the play, so many characters are played by two people- while several actors play multiple roles. Each actor was shot solo in front of greenscreens, but the title also makes use of footage shot in a living history village and archival footage to create a visually dense moving collage, The first cast was recorded in the Portland area, and includes local figures like Reese Rideout and Noah Mckens. The second cast was shot in Los Angeles, New York and Pennsylvania (and also includes several appearances via remote shooting or archival footage). Presented as the end of a 25 year-long experiment with lo fi/mumblecore filmmaking, which the director cites are being no longer commercially viable or culturally relevant. The final product was eventually released for free online in 2021. The music in the film is by Julia Kent (or Antony and the Johnsons and Rasputina) and songs are provided by Diamanda Galas and LA artist Featherbeard. Additional music was used more like foley, and is provided by Controlled Breathing.
