Galore is the debut mixtape by French singer-songwriter Oklou. It was released on September 24, 2020 via True Panther/Tap Records. It is her first project released in two years since her 2018 EP The Rite of May. The mixtape was announced in July 2020 alongside the announcement of the release of its lead single, "unearth me".[1] The project features collaborations with Zero Castigo, Casey MQ and was produced by Oklou herself with the help of GRADES and A. G. Cook. Oklou started working on the project during the summer of 2019 and she is crediter as a writer on all the 11 tracks on the record.

Background[edit]

In January 2020 Oklou released her first single of the year, Toyota, featuring Flavien Berger.[2]

The following month the artist released a second stand-alone single, entertnmnt. The track marks her first collaboration with British producer Mura Masa and it was received well, receiving around 1.5 million plays on Spotify by the end of 2020.[3]

On April 23rd, 2020 Oklou released a third single, SGSY, in celebration of her birthday. The track’s name stems from the main hook “she’s gonna slaughter you”.[4]

Altough these three tracks were considered the singles from Oklou's debut album, on July 28th, 2020, Oklou revealed on her Instagram page that she would release a mixtape in September 2020 and that it would have 11 previously unreleased tracks and would be released as several sets of different songs.[5]

Promotion[edit]

The mixtape was released as different sets of a number of songs.

unearth me was released as the lead single of the mixtape on July 30, 2020. A music video for the song was uploaded on her YouTube page on the same day, directed by Kevin Elamrani-Lince.[6]

The song fall was premiered on July 23rd, 2020, via a COLORS live performance.[7] The tracks fall, galor, god's chariots, girl on my throne and nightimewere released as promotional singles between July and September 2020.

Oklou performed nightime and rosebud for the first time live as part of Cook's massive “Appleville” livestream event alongside Charli XCX, 100 gecs, and Clairo.[8]

Music videos were filmed for the songs galore and i didn't give up on you, released respectively in August and Ocotober 2020.

On the day of the release of the mixtape, Oklou uploaded a visualizer on Youtube directed by herself and saradibiza and made with the help of graphic designer Virgile Flores.[9]

Critical reception[edit]

The mixtape was well received by critics. NMEs Caitlin O'Reilly described Galore as a "delicate, avant-garde collection of songs that explore emotional rebirth and feminine emancipation" but criticized the project, pointing out the excessive use of auto-tune, especially on the last track i didn't give up on you, and how it "tries to spin a mystical story of lost shepherds and white horses, but it often feels like there’s not much thematic substance behind the imagery".[10] Noah Simon of Sparky explained in his review of the mixtape that girl on my throne is one of the best pop songs of 2020 and complimented Oklou's effort to subvert pop music conventions, that presume "uniformity, stability, predictability, characteristics that rarely map onto actual lived experience".[11] Highclouds's Alberto wrote that "Galore has dispelled any doubts Mayniel might have had about her status as an artist" and defined the project as a "proper mixtape, a collection of short pop songs that might all share the same open-hearted, straight-to-the-gut ethos, but that are ultimately rather varied in form". He noted that the "not only the production work is extremely careful, but every synth tone is also painstakingly chosen, every beat exactly matching up the energy of the vocal melody" and that "every track is amplified and given their own singular treatment so they all live up to their potential", which leads to the more undercooked tracks ending up as some of the most appealing on the mixtape.[12]

Commercial performance[edit]

Altough Galore didn't appear on any major global charts, it debuted and peaked at number 20 on the French Albums iTunes Chart on the same day of the release. It was the sixth highest new-entry on the chart, as its release was overshadowed by French singer Juliette Gréco's death on September 23, 2020.[13] It spent two other days in the top 100, charting for a total of three days on the French Albums iTunes chart. [14] Additionally, the mixtape has accumulated a total of over 1 million plays on Spotify.[15]
