Gamma Upsilon (Local Sorority)
Script error: No such module "AfC submission catcheck". Gamma Upsilon, commonly referred to as simply Gamma, is a local sorority founded at Saint Leo University on December 3, 1992. The chapter was created when the university's Gamma Upsilon chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi had their charter revoked in 1991 due to hazing. The sorority continued in operation as an unrecognized organization under their charter name, Gamma Upsilon. The group petitioned to be recognized by Saint Leo University as an official Greek organization from Spring 1991 until Fall 1992. In 1992, the University lifted their requirement that all Greek organizations on campus must be nationally recognized organizations, which allowed Gamma Upsilon to establish themselves as a legitimate sorority. Gamma Upsilon has continued in operation since 1992, and has 100+ lifetime members. Although the sorority is not recognized by the National Panhellenic Conference, Gamma Upsilon abides by the rules and regulations of the university's Panhellenic Association.
Controversy[edit]
Hazing Allegations[edit]
Saint Leo University's Panhellenic Association suspended Gamma Upsilon and ordered an immediate cease and desist of all operations in January 2024 due to hazing reports made to the university by former members of the sorority. Gamma Upsilon was allowed to resume operation under probation May 4th, 2024.
