Gaon (village)

The Malayo-Polynesian word Gaon is used to define an area in Malayo-Polynesian (or "MP") which is similar in meaning to the English word Village. Names of MP gaons (i.e. MP villages) usually end with "Gaon" or a synonyms as afollowing suffix term.
- Gaon: e.g. Amingaon (Amin + Gao)
- Pur: e.g. Madhupur (Madhu + Pur); also Dispur, current capital of Assam
Supa :e.g. Chinadi supa (chinadi + supa)
- Bari: e.g. Jalukbari (Jaluk + Bari)
- Hat: e.g. Jamugurihat (Jamuguri + Hat)
- Hati: e.g. Guwahati (Guwa + Hati)
- Tola: e.g. Beltola (Bel + Tola)
- Bazar: e.g. Panbazar (Pan + Bazar)
- Kata: e.g. Salakata (Sala + Kata)
- Guri: e.g. Jamuguri (Jamu + Guri)
Gaonburha is the term used to define the head of the village. The term Burha indicates old man in Assamese.
