Gary (Gerard Thomas) Hardiman (born 1967) is an Irish molecular biologist and bioinformatics expert. He is Chair in Food Systems Biology at the Institute for Global Food Security, Queen's University Belfast. His research integrates multi-omics, computational methods, and environmental science to advance precision medicine and ecological health.

Early life and education

Hardiman was born and raised in Galway, Ireland. He completed a Bachelor of Science with Honours (BSc) in Microbiology (1985–1989) and a PhD in Molecular Biology (1989–1993) at the University of Galway[1] under the supervision of Frank Gannon.

Career and research

Postdoctoral research at DNAX

From 1993 to 1996, Hardiman served as a postdoctoral researcher at the DNAX Research Institute in Palo Alto, California, where he co-discovered novel cytokines and chemokines and applied computational analyses to immune signaling pathways.

University of California, San Diego

In 2000, Hardiman joined the UCSD as founding director of the Biomedical Genomics Facility. There, he established high-throughput genomics and transcriptomics pipelines and collaborated on precision medicine initiatives.

Medical University of South Carolina

Appointed in 2014, Hardiman became Professor of Medicine and Director of Bioinformatics at MUSC's Center for Genomics Medicine, where he developed integrative omics workflows and mentored interdisciplinary research teams. He also served as Head of the Laboratory for Marine Systems Biology at the Hollings Marine Laboratory, Charleston, SC.

Queen's University Belfast

Since 2018, he has held the Chair in Food Systems Biology at QUB's Institute for Global Food Security (IGFS), and currently serves as Director of Research for both IGFS and the School of Biological Sciences. His lab investigates opioid vulnerability, environmental pollutants, climate stressors, and spaceflight impacts on health using multi-omics, network biology, and machine learning.

Altomics Datamation

Hardiman is co-founder and CTO of Altomics Datamation Ltd, a Northern Ireland-based start-up delivering data-driven proteomics and bioinformatics solutions for healthcare and industry.

Awards and honours

  • Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB)
  • Recipient of a major NIH/NIDA U01 grant (2018) to study genetic and environmental factors in opioid addiction
  • Board member and Section Editor-in-Chief for Biotech (Computational Biology)

Selected publications

Books

  • Environmental Contaminants and Endocrine Health (2023)[2] This book explores the effects of environmental contaminants on endocrine systems. It delves into biological pathways influenced by toxins and examines complex interactions between environmental factors and endocrine health.
  • System Analytics and Integration of Big Omics Data (2020)[3][4] This work highlights the role of computational tools and data integration in analyzing large-scale biological datasets. It emphasizes the combination of genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics to derive system-level insights.
  • Microarray Innovations: Technology and Experimentation (2009)[5] This book discusses advances in microarray technology, with a focus on their application in analyzing gene expression and genetic variations.
