Gary Joseph Menke (born June 10, 1963) is an American stand-up comedian known as The Menker. He does most of his comedy acts at The Improv, as well other clubs such as The Funny Bone and several centers for Autism.

Early life and education[edit]

Menke grew-up in Kearney, Nebraska, a small town west to the state capitol, Lincoln. Menke stated that his father was the principal at his Elementary school, and others were aware of it, so in order for Menke to try to protect himself from being bullied, he would try any possible way to be comedic. Menke considered himself as an "Oddball" and a "Geek". He was known to be a Practical Joker as well , putting a cube of bullion in the shower heads at school. Students who showered after gym classes couldn't figure out why they smelled like roasted chicken.[1] After graduating from Kearney High School in 1981, Menke moved to Phoenix attended Walter Cronkite School of Broadcasting at Arizona State University and end-up graduating there with a major degree in Telecommunications, and soon became a Weatherman for KHGI-TV, but got fired due to being consistently inaccurate.[2]

Career[edit]

While attending College in Arizona, Menke had two roommates who were both Comics themselves at Tempe's Improv club, and Menke knowing how to joked, he helped write some for them and realized he should be doing what they've done. Soon, he joined them at the Club and it was by then he learned his talent of Stand-up. From 1989 to 1991, Menke formed at seven different full-time clubs in Phoenix, and formed three to four sets on every Thursdays, and it was this period that Phoenix had a development of its comedy acts by others such as Pablo Francisco, David Spade, and Michael Finney.[1] Menke then moved to Orlando, Florida after losing his job of being a Weatherman, and there he continues his comedic at both Orlando's and Tampa's Improv clubs, and toured across the South for the Funny Bone. While working at the Improv, he volunteered to star at their special events known as "Haha for Autism" in support for his son, Esston.[3] Menke told news reporters that the most craziest time he had on Stage is when a drunk individual attacked him after hearing an insulting joke that Menke made for some reason.[4] Menke and his family soon moves back in the Midwest close to his homestate of Nebraska in Davenport, Iowa in 2015. However, he continued his act at the Funny Bone in both Omaha and Des Moines, and certain other near-by comedy clubs such as in Lincoln and Kearney, his hometown. He also continued to give support for his son and others' with an Autism Spectrum Disorder at the "Nebraska Autism Center",[5] all with the money he received from his performances within the 2015's "Corn Belt Comedy Tour" including at the Funny Bone.[6]

Personal Life[edit]

Menke's son, Esston (born October 21, 1998), suffers from an Autism Spectrum Disorder and according to Menke, didn't speaks until he was five years old. Esston also does comedy and have performed at the Improv in Florida, and even was another volunteer for "Haha for Autism", and makes $6,500, but when saying to interviewers about it, Menke demands them not to tell him, because he don't know, but really is joking. Menke reveals he does 10 shows for Autism Speaks, also in support for his son, and donates 107 proceeds.[7]

Menke told KMTV-TV that his Uncle is a Priest, and when usually he comes to their family Thanksgiving celebration, he refuses to preach as it his daily routine.[8]

It highly obvious that Menke's family are Republicans, as stated on one of his Stages in which he discussed about Politicians, he admits his mother loves Sarah Palin, and agrees that she should be the country's president.[9]

Menke was arrested on April 28, 2016 in Davenport, for not having an Insurance, but was released only 31 minutes after being Booked.[10]
