Gavin Bradley is a writer and paleontologist from Belfast, Northern Ireland, currently working and residing in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In addition to conducting paleontological research on dinosaur behavior under the guidance of Philip J. Currie,[1] Bradley has gained prominence as an emerging poet. His debut poetry collection, Separation Anxiety, was published by the University of Alberta Press in 2022 and won the Bridges of Struga International Poetry Award in 2023.[2]

Bio[edit]

Paleontology[edit]

After completing a BSc in Archaeology and Paleoecology at Queen’s University Belfast, Bradley was awarded a Canada Memorial Foundation Scholarship, and moved to Edmonton, Alberta, to complete an MSc in Systematics and Evolution under the supervision of Philip Currie. His research focused on the behavior and growth of tyrannosauridae dinosaurs and missing data in the fossil record. He is an assistant lecturer in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta.[citation needed]

Writing[edit]

Gavin Bradley's poetry and short stories have appeared in a number of venues including The Irish Times, The North, Glass Buffalo, Best New British and Irish Poets, Gallery of Curiosities, and the long-running Canadian speculative fiction print series Tesseracts. In 2020, his poem “Brine” won the inaugural POFEST Poetry Prize from the Edmonton Poetry Festival. His first collection, Separation Anxiety, was published by the University of Alberta Press, and explores the deterioration of a long-term relationship, interweaving poems dealing with the loneliness of immigration and the anxiety of separation from Northern Ireland and the people left behind. Irish poet Anne Casey referred to the collection as: “a brilliant, potent, poignant and significant debut by a poet destined to make his mark.”[3]

In 2023, Separation Anxiety won the Bridges of Struga International Poetry Award for the best debut book by a young author. Bradley's book became the first by an Irish author to win this award, which is celebrated jointly by the Struga Poetry Evenings and UNESCO.[4] The announcement of Bradley's victory took place at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, on March 21, 2023, in the presence of the General Director of UNESCO, The President of North Macedonia, The Minister of Culture of North Macedonia, and members of The Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
