Critical Reception[edit]

Ethnomusicologist Louise Meintijes of Duke University describes Kwaito Promise as: “A work that will make music ethnography legible to scholars engaged with critical theory. Steingo produces a story that makes kwaito sensible to those unfamiliar with it and that brings kwaito fans into print without reducing their struggle nor demanding that they represent resistance. The result is an exceptional analysis of freedom in music.”[10]

The Boston University Music Library describes Kwaito's Promise: "Centered around the rise of kwaito music - a form of electronic music - after Apartheid, Steingo explores an often misunderstood and maligned genre and it's ambiguous relationship with society and politics in South Africa. Enjoy a book the music grad students call "an instant classic"!"[11]

Creative Projects[edit]

Steingo curated "Performative Dialogue," an event concerning afro-futurism featuring the artist Kapwani Kiwanga.[12] He is a frequent contributor to Afropop Worldwide and has also written for Doggerel.[13][14][15] When asked if his practice is political, Steingo replied: "The various possible answers to the question seem scripted in advance – like we are arriving at this question too late."[16]
