From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Gaylerd Falde (May 1, 1918 – August 15, 1989) was the president and bishop of the California District and South Pacific District of the American Lutheran Church for 33 years. He made the establishment of a Lutheran college in California a top priority for his ministry, and in 1957, he became the chairman of California Lutheran College's first Board of Governors.[1]

California Lutheran University

As Lutherans lacked a four-year college in California, religious leaders made it a priority to establish a Lutheran institution for higher education in the state. A North Hollywood meeting convened by Falde on Sept. 13, 1954, laid the foundations for The Committee of Twenty-Five. The committee's goal was the establishment of a Lutheran college on the West Coast. Their first meeting was held on October 29, 1954, but the committee was unable to agree whether the college should be nationally or regionally controlled. The California Lutheran Educational Foundation (CLEF) was established on June 4, 1957, with the "purpose of promoting, and encouraging through a development fund, a Lutheran, senior, liberal arts college somewhere in the Los Angeles area." The first Board of Governors met on November 3, 1957, with Orville Dahl as its first Director and Gaylerd Falde as its Chairman. Falde made the new college the top priority for his ministry, and it was announced on March 7, 1958, that the college was to be opened in 1961. Norwegian farmers of the Norwegian Colony in the Conejo Valley would later donate 130 acres in September 1957, where the college could be built.[2][3][4]
