Gehad Hamdy (born 1995 in Egypt) is an Egyptian dentist and feminist activist against sexual harassment.[1]
Gehad Hamdy realized that there was a need for a space where women felt safe to report sexual harassment. For this reason, she founded Speak Up, in 2020, a feminist initiaive that is dedicated to pointing out the aggressors of gender violence, sexual harassment and rapists through social networks.[2] Gehad Hamdy makes this violence visible by denouncing the role of cinema, encouraging women to speak out about harassment and providing legal and emotional support. The initiative's motto is "Girls Support Girls" (Girls Support Girls)[3] and, within a year, the company had 500,000 followers on Facebook and more than 350,000 on Instagram.[4]
2021 - finalist of the Women4 Africa international humanitarian award.
2022 - She was included in the BBC's list of the 100 most inspiring women in the world.
Establishment of Speak Up:
With a determination to address the prevalent challenge of sexual harassment in Egypt, Gehad founded the Speak Up initiative in 2020.[5] Recognizing the pressing need for a secure and supportive platform, she aimed to empower victims from diverse backgrounds.[6]
The Impact of Speak Up:
Under Gehad's leadership, Speak Up has launched impactful campaigns against harassers and rapists, leading to their apprehension and accountability. The initiative has also confronted public figures promoting rape culture, advocating for their accountability.[7]
A notable example of Speak Up's influence was the campaign against serial child rapist Michael Fahmy, where Gehad's determined efforts resulted in the perpetrator's life sentence. Moreover, Speak Up's advocacy contributed to legal changes, such as the criminalization of Female Genital Mutilation in Egypt in March 2021.[8][9]
