Gene Hallman Jr. (born December 22, 1959) is an American sports marketing and event management entrepreneur based in Birmingham, Alabama. He has been cited as one of the most influential sports businessmen in the state of Alabama. [1] As of 2023, he serves as Chairman and CEO of Eventive Sports. Hallman was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame as Distinguished American Sportsman in 2022. [2]

Early life and education[edit]

Hallman was born in Anderson, South Carolina. He secured his bachelor's in economics at the College of Charleston in 1982 and a master's in business administration at the University of South Carolina in 1985. [3]

Career[edit]

Hallman began his career as a manager for PGA Tour Golfers, starting as a marketing consultant for Corey Pavin. In 1991, he moved to Birmingham to manage the inaugural Bruno's Memorial Classic Golf tournament.

As entrepreneur[edit]

In 1995, Hallman established the Bruno Event Team, providing event management services for a wide variety of sports. The company was renamed Eventive Sports In 2023. [4] Eventive Sports has more than 80 employees located in nine offices throughout the United States and Bermuda.  Hallman specialized in golf tournaments, and has managed events on the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions, LPGA Tour, and Korn Ferry Tour. [3]

His company has also been involved in managing numerous major tournaments, including the U.S. Senior Open, U.S. Women’s Open, and the 2013 Walker Cup. [5]

In 1996, Hallman found his way into other sports, serving as the CEO of Birmingham Olympic Soccer, which helped oversee the men’s soccer matches held in Birmingham as part of the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. [6]

His extensive experience with soccer led him to managing various sports event including a 2005 Men’s World Cup qualifier between the USA and Guatemala, a 2015 USA Women’s World Cup Victory Tour match vs. Haiti, numerous men’s, and women’s USA team friendlies, and two NCAA Championships in 2011-12. [7]

Hallman also has been involved with the management of the 2004 Olympic Marathon Trials in Birmingham, two Davis Cup ties (2009 and 2017) and a Fed Cup tie (2010) in tennis, the 2014 NCAA Gymnastics Championship, and numerous SEC Gymnastics Championships. [8]

Hallman with his company promoted four World Boxing Championships Heavyweight Title Fights featuring Tuscaloosa native, Deontay Wilder in Birmingham between 2015 – 2017.

In 2020, Hallman and his company pivoted from the event business to helping with the COVID-19 testing plan for university students. Hallman’s initial COVID-19 work led to working with the state of Alabama and Jefferson County on messaging around the COVID-19 vaccine, setting up medium-to-large-scale vaccination sites and staffing a call center related to the vaccine.
