General category (reservation)
General category refers to a category of population in India which is not entitled to any quota/reservation in recruitment for government jobs and admission to education institutions.
People belonging to scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, other backward class and economically weaker section categories, which have reservation in government jobs and education, are free to contest from general category along with the people not belonging to these categories.[1][2]
The concept of the "general category" in India has been a topic of discussion and debate for many years. While it encompasses a wide range of individuals, it is essential to note that even within the general category, there exists significant diversity in terms of socioeconomic backgrounds, opportunities, and challenges to find government jobs[3]
The absence of quotas or reservations for this category has often sparked conversations about creating a level playing field for all citizens, irrespective of their caste or economic status. In recent years, there have been calls for a more nuanced approach to affirmative action policies that consider factors beyond just caste, aiming to ensure equal access to opportunities for every Indian citizen.
