Genius Foods Limited is a manufacturer of gluten and wheat-free baked products such as breads, cakes, and pies. The company's headquarters are located in Edinburgh.

History

Genius Foods Ltd. was founded in 2008 by Scottish chef and writer Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne[1] under the name Gardyne Foods Limited.

It has also acquired several subsidiary companies; two of which operate as manufacturing sites. UCB, based in Bathgate, West Lothian; and Chapel Foods, based in Bottesford, North Lincolnshire.

It also owns the Livwell brand, acquired in 2013 with the purchase of United Central Bakeries.[2] Although retaining the Livwell brand, the production plant in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire was closed in 2017 due to struggling international trade.[3] This resulted in the loss of 151 full-time employees over two rounds of redundancies.

Product Recalls

Genius Foods has had two significant product recalls.

One in 2015 involved several products produced for supermarket own-label brands. These products contained gluten, despite being labelled gluten-free.[4]

A second recall occurred in 2019, when egg contamination was discovered in bagels labelled as egg-free.[5]
