Genius Solutions is a Canadian software company based in Quebec City, Quebec. It develops enterprise resource planning (ERP) software for small and medium-sized enterprises in manufacturing.[1][2] The company offers two platforms, Genius ERP and Prextra ERP, designed to support production, inventory, and business management.[3]
History
Founded in 1989, Genius Solutions began as an industrial engineering consulting firm based in Quebec City, Quebec.[4][5] In 1995, the company released Genius ERP, the first version of its enterprise resource planning software.[6] Since then, it has focused on developing Genius ERP for manufacturers that produce build-to-order products in sectors such as equipment, machinery, transportation, and aerospace.[7][8][9] The company also offers Prextra ERP, a software platform designed to support firms in manufacturing, distribution, and services.[3]
Jean Magny is the president and CEO of Genius Solutions.[10][11] He joined the company in 1997 after graduating from the Université Laval with a mechanical engineering degree.[12] Magny implemented ISO standards for manufacturing clients. He was also involved in training, consulting, and sales.[13] Magny was appointed president in 2006, as the company became an ERP software provider for small and medium-sized enterprises in North America.[6][14] Over the years, Magny has contributed articles to trade publications on ERP usage in the manufacturing industry.[15][16][17] He has been interviewed by The Globe and Mail about employee engagement and business sustainability.[10][18]
In November 2009, the company received $240,000 in funding from Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED).[19] In April 2015, it obtained an additional $375,000 through the Quebec Economic Development Program (QEDP).[20] Canadian politician Denis Lebel announced that the funding would help the business implement a commercialization strategy in the United States, targeting markets for metal tanks, trailers, and industrial machinery.[21][22]
In July 2025, Genius Solutions received funding from Scale AI, an artificial intelligence consortium that invested $98.6 million in 23 technology projects.[23][24] The funding supports integrating three AI modules into Genius ERP, including tools for inventory management, production planning, and quotation automation.[25] That same year, Genius Solutions participated in industry trade shows such as Hannover Messe and the Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show (CMTS).[26][27][28]
In October 2025, Genius Solutions acquired CDID, a Quebec company that developed the Prextra ERP platform for manufacturers, distributors, and service providers.[4][29][30] Approximately 100 CDID employees joined Genius Solutions, bringing the company's total workforce to about 225.[31] Following the acquisition, Prextra ERP continued to operate under its existing brand.[3]
Software
Genius Solutions offers two software platforms, Genius ERP and Prextra ERP, designed for small and medium-sized enterprises.[32][33] The company has also partnered with Canadian educational institutions to integrate its software into engineering programs.[2][34]
Genius ERP
Genius ERP supports production processes in manufacturing, such as engineering management, inventory management, project management, and quality control.[35][36] It offers tools for cost estimations, business analytics, accounting, scheduling, and automation to optimize production planning.[37][38] Users can monitor order processing in real time and track jobs on mobile devices.[39][40] The system also includes an integrated customer relationship management (CRM) module.[41][42]
In 2014, the company released Genius Manufacturing 7.2, an updated version of its enterprise resource planning software.[43][44] In 2016, Genius Manufacturing ERP V8 was released with updated modules for accounting, preliminary purchasing, and customer relationship management.[45][46] In 2019, Genius ERP was certified by Technology Evaluation Centers (TEC) as an engineer-to-order manufacturing ERP solution, meeting the business benchmarks established by TEC analysts.[39]
Genius ERP has continued to add and update software features since its release.[47] In 2022, Magny was interviewed by Fine Engineering Magazine about the CAD2BOM system, which transfers a bill of materials (BOM) from a CAD program into the Genius ERP platform.[1] The automated process imports the BOM to reduce manual data entry and improve accuracy.[38] Magny also discussed the software's Smart Scheduling feature, which was developed using Eliyahu Goldratt's Theory of Constraints.[48] The system automatically generates a production schedule based on the most limited resource, helping manufacturers plan and prioritize their operations.[49]
Prextra ERP
Prextra ERP is a software platform that supports manufacturers, distributors, project managers, retailers, and service providers.[4] Originally developed by CDID, the software includes modules for sales, production, and customer relationship management, along with tools for cost analysis and performance reporting.[50][51]
Awards
In 2024, Jean Magny received the CEO of the Year award from the Quebec Technology Association (AQT) and the National Bank of Canada.[14][52] The award is presented annually to CEOs from Quebec's technology and digital sectors.[53][54] AQT cited Magny's leadership, innovation, and contributions to Quebec's economic growth.[55]
