Geo.admin.ch - the federal geoportal is the federal government platform that facilitates public access to Switzerland's spatial data. It was created following the entry into force of the Federal Geoinformation Act[2] and is addressing both the general public and professionals, and its intention is to contribute towards a more effective dissemination of the comprehensive information that exists in this field relating to its territory. It is a comprehensive Geoportal service platform of the Swiss Confederation within the Federal Administration directly accessing federal geographical information, data, and services that grants access to geodata, maps, and metadata from more than 25 authoritative sources for Switzerland. The platform is operated by swisstopo on behalf of the coordinating agency for Federal geographical information (GCG).

It was officially launched on January 1st, 2010, followed by a press release on August 18th, 2010.

Though the map viewer service map.geo.admin.ch has sometimes been described as a competitor or rival to Google Maps, it is different from Google's mapping service (launched 5 years before in February 2005), since they have different objectives. geo.admin.ch is the platform for the Federal Administration’s georeferenced information, data, and services. These are made available by public bodies and are accessible to all via the Internet, on geo.admin.ch. Over 700 unique geodata sources are made available to the public, such as the renowned 18th-century Dufour Map and the Siegfried Map, in addition to swisstopo road maps, administrative maps, topographic maps, cadastral and building surveys, public service utility maps, transportation maps, hydrographic maps, atmospheric and weather maps, geological maps, land use maps, maps of cultural sites, and much more. All geodata, maps, and aerial photographs at geo.admin.ch may be combined, annotated, shared, printed, linked, and viewed in transparent layers controlled by the user. The highest resolution of aerial photography (10 cm) nationwide, in general, is higher than what is available at Google Maps for Switzerland. Place names are identified and searchable for smallest villages and physical locations, beyond what is found on similar sites.

In connection with the infrastructure developed at the cantonal [3] and municipal levels, geo.admin.ch constitutes an important component of the future national geoinformation infrastructure. Geo.admin.ch, based on the Federal Geoinformation Act [2], stipulates that, in order to ensure utilization at all levels, the federal, cantonal, and municipal authorities, the business sector, the general public, and scientific circles are to be provided with fast, simple, and reliable access to up-to-date geodata encompassing the entire territory of Switzerland, at the required level of quality, and at a reasonable cost. geo.admin.ch fulfills the requirement of a common reference framework for geographic data and services of public interest in order to foster a network that facilitates their utilization. It also forms the necessary basis for the creation of a national geoinformation infrastructure resulting from coordinated activities at the federal, cantonal, and municipal levels.

The portal is available in Switzerland’s four official languages, as well as in English, and is targeted for both the general public and professionals, for a fast, innovative, stable, and robust implementation of a single point of entry, including catalogue, map viewing function, and services for spatial data sets according to the Federal Geoinformation Act [2] to increase the economic benefit of basic geographical data.

Winner of approximately 15 national and international awards, including the United Nations Public Service Award, 2nd place (2012)[4], geo.admin.ch is the comprehensive federal government platform for geoinformation, geodata, and geoservices. It is accessible to the general public and contains more than 700 geodata sets originating from a variety of federal bodies, as well as more than 20 thematic portals. Anyone who wants to can view, print, and order geodata. It is visited by an average of around 40,000 users per day. The technical infrastructure comprises a combination of original open-source solutions and cloud computing services and received several awards for the use of open-source and cloud computing infrastructure.

Since the launch of its services (API, RESTful API) in Summer 2010, the Swiss service has progressively added new data and has undergone significant updates. The latest major upgrade became available in summer 2018 with the addition of 3D services covering Switzerland.

History of the project

Reasons for commissioning

geo.admin.ch is the practical implementation of the Geoinformation Act (GeoIG)[2]. This enables the exchange and efficient use of geographical information, based on the Federal spatial data infrastructure, FSDI.

  • The portal is an important and necessary step in the implementation of the GeoIG. Basic geodata are rapidly available over the Internet, in a clearly structured and complete form.
  • This portal gives access to the important information on the official geodata of the Confederation through a single web address. geo.admin.ch is the information platform for the official geodata of every Federal Office.
