George Panagiotis Fegaras (born April 26, 2004) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing for the Cornell Big Red in the NCAA as a prospect to the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League (NHL). Selected by the Stars in the third round, 83rd overall, of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft after an impressive season in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) with the North York Rangers. Before joining Cornell, he also spent time in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
Playing career
Amateur
In 2019, George Fegaras began his junior ice hockey career playing at the U15 AAA level for the Richmond Hill Coyotes. Throughout the season, he recorded 34 points (12 goals, 22 assists) in 28 games, ranking seventh in team scoring. He was also called up to play five games with the Coyotes' U16 AAA team, contributing one assist. During the postseason, Fegaras participated in playoff games with both age groups, tallying a combined total of three goals and eight points in nine appearances. Building on his early success, Fegaras was named team captain of the Richmond Hill Coyotes U16 team for the 2020 season. In that leadership role, he registered 31 points (10 goals, 21 assists) across 35 regular-season games and added two goals and four points in 10 playoff contests, demonstrating strong two-way play and offensive instincts from the blue line.
In 2021, Fegaras joined the North York Rangers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), a prominent Junior A league in Canada. However, due to the widespread impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020–21 season was cancelled, resulting in a year without competitive league play. He returned to the Rangers for the 2021–22 OJHL season and quickly emerged as one of the team's top defensemen. Fegaras recorded 13 goals and 48 points in 52 games during the regular season, finishing among the top scorers among OJHL defensemen.[1] North York ended the regular season with 79 points, placing second in the Southeast Conference. In the playoffs, the Rangers defeated the St. Michael's Buzzers in the Division Semifinals, 2–1, before falling to the eventual league runner-up, the Toronto Jr. Canadiens, in the Division Finals, 2–0. Fegaras' contributions were recognized league-wide, as he was named to the OJHL First All-Star Team, an honor he shared with goaltending teammate James Gray.[2]
Fegaras' performance attracted the attention of NHL scouts, and in the offseason he was selected by the Dallas Stars in the third round, 83rd overall, of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.[3] He continued his development during the 2022–23 season with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League (USHL), where he tallied four goals and 27 points in 61 games, further solidifying his reputation as a reliable offensive defenseman.[4]
Collegiate
2023–24: Freshman season, NCAA Regional Finals
In 2021, Fegaras announced his commitment to play collegiate hockey for Cornell University.[5] He began his NCAA career in the fall of 2023 as a freshman defenseman during the 2023–24 season. Over 33 games, Fegaras recorded three goals and seven points, contributing to both special teams and five-on-five play. Cornell finished the regular season with a 22–7–6 record and secured an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the tournament, the Big Red defeated the Maine Black Bears in the Regional Semifinal before falling to the eventual national champion Denver Pioneers in the Regional Final.[6][7]
2024–25: Sophomore season, NCAA Regional Finals
During the 2024–25 season, Fegaras entered his sophomore year with an increased role on the blueline. He tallied one goal and 13 assists for a total of 14 points in 30 games, becoming a key playmaker on the power play and a dependable presence in the defensive zone. Cornell again qualified for the NCAA Tournament and staged a dramatic upset over the top-seeded Michigan State Spartans in the Regional Semifinal. With under nine seconds remaining in regulation, Fegaras scored the game-winning goal, propelling Cornell to the next round in one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.[8][9][10] In the Regional Final, Cornell faced off against the Boston University Terriers in a tightly contested matchup. Fegaras assisted on the game-tying goal late in the third period, helping force overtime. However, Cornell's tournament run ended when BU scored the decisive goal in the extra frame to advance to the Frozen Four.[11][12]
2025–26: Junior season, Regional Semifinals
