George Henry Grey

Lt.-Col. George Henry Grey (21 March 1835 – 11 December 1874) was a British Army officer.

Lt.-Col. George Henry Grey was born on 21 March 1835. He was the eldest son of Sir George Grey, 2nd Baronet and Anna Sophia Ryder.

After the outbreak of the Crimean War, he was commissioned an ensign in the Rifle Brigade on 7 December 1854,[1] and promoted to lieutenant on 29 December 1854.[2] On 10 May 1858, he was promoted to a captaincy.[3] On 25 March 1859, he exchanged into the Grenadier Guards as a lieutenant and captain.[4] He retired from the Guards on 7 September 1865.[5]

He also served in the Northumberland Militia, and was promoted from major to lieutenant-colonel on 15 August 1874.[6]

He married Harriet Jane Pearson, youngest daughter of Lt-Col. Peter Pearson, on 20 November 1860. They had six children:

  • Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon (25 Apr 1862—7 Sep 1933)
  • Alice Emma Grey (9 March 1865—4 Nov 1936) married on 30 July 1889, Charles Larcom Graves, son of the Bishop of Limerick, and leaving issue
  • George Grey (14 Jul 1866—3 Feb 1911), died unmarried
  • Jane Grey (29 Oct 1868—17 Aug 1949) married on 28 November 1891, Rev Charles Evelyn Cambridge de Coetlogon, leaving issue
  • Rev Alexander Harry Grey (10 Jun 1870—24 Oct 1914) married on 28 July 1900, Ethel Mabel Gertrude, daughter of Rev Canon Christopher Huggins, Rector of San Fernando
  • Constance Mary Grey (31 Jan 1872—22 Jun 1958) married 18 January 1905, Edward Beaumont Cotton Curtis, leaving issue
  • Charles Grey (soldier) (23 Aug 1873—28 Sep 1928), died without issue

Grey was for many years a friend of Bertie, Prince of Wales, and served as an equerry to the Prince from 9 November 1858[7] until his death on 11 December 1874, at the age of 39. He predeceased his father, whose baronetcy was inherited by Lieutenant-Colonel Grey's eldest son, Edward.
