George Negroponte

Early life and career[edit]

Born in New York City, Negroponte studied painting at Yale University alongside painters Bernard Chanet, William Bailey, and Al Held, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1975. He also attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in Maine, in 1973.[1][2][3]

Negroponte has held positions on the boards of numerous arts organizations, including as co-chairman at The Drawing Center in New York City, and as a panelist at the New York State Council on the Arts. He has been a Visual Arts lecturer for over two decades at Princeton University, and an instructor at Parsons School of Design and The New York Studio School, as well as being the curator of several exhibitions. He has also written on many contemporary artists.[1][2][4][3]

The painter's work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in the United States, Greece, Japan, and Italy, and can be found in many public collections, including those of the Fogg Art Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art[5] and MOMA[6], and The Museum of Modern Art in Andros, Greece.[1][2]

Personal life[edit]

He is married to Virva Hinnemo and has lived in Springs, Long Island since May of 2012. Negroponte currently works as a fundraising consultant with several non-profit organizations in NYC and makes art in his studio in East Hampton, NY.[3]

He cites abstract expressionists Mark Rothko and Theodoros Stamos as his most influential inspirations.
