The George Washington mural, sometimes referred to as "Gagged Washington," is a mural located at 1502 U Street NW, Washington D.C, above Shangri-La Day Spa.[1] It was installed by artists Aniekan Oudofia and Liz Brown in April 2011.
History
The mural was commissioned by DC Vote,[2] an organization that advocates for DC Statehood and equal rights for District residents.[3] Daniel Solomon, who is the founder of DC Vote, owns the building on which the mural is painted.[4] According to Solomon, the depiction of George Washington being gagged indicates the lack of representation of Washington D.C in Congress, and shows the need to give the city a voice.[5]
Artist Aniekan Oudofia
Aniekan Oudofia is one of D.C.’s "best-known muralists"[6] according to the Washington City Paper, and is part of the MuralsDC collective.[7] Oudofia's other notable murals in Washington D.C include the mural of President Obama and Bill Cosby at Ben’s Chili Bowl and the mural of Duke Ellington, both on U Street NW. He has worked with the MuralsDC program since its start in 2007.[8] Udofia believes his murals are meant to bring people together and unite people of multiple races, faiths and genders around local artwork with powerful social justice messages.[9]
