Biography[edit]

Georges Teyssot is an architect and a scholar. He has taught history and theory at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura of Venice (I.U.A.V.) in Italy from 1981 to 1993; at Princeton University’s School of Architecture (USA) intermittently from 1989 to 2002; and at the GTA in the Department of Architecture at Zurich’s ETH in 2009. Presently, since 2004, he is Professor at Laval University’s School of Architecture in Quebec City (QC, CA). His articles have been translated in twelve languages. He has authored and edited more than nineteen volumes, including one on: Die Krankheit des Domizils. Wohnen und Wohnbau, 1800-1930, [The Disease of the Domicile], (Wiesbaden: Vieweg, 1989). He has directed a collective volume with Monique Mosser, entitled The Architecture of Western Gardens (Milan: Electa, 1990; Cambridge, MA: The M.I.T. Press, 1991; Paris: Flammarion, 1991, 2002; Stuttgart: D.V.A., 1993); which was republished under a new title, The History of Garden Design: The Western Tradition from the Renaissance to the Present Day, (New York: Thames and Hudson, 1991, 2000). He has written the introduction to the volume of Diller + Scofidio, Flesh: Architectural Probes (New York: Princeton Architectural Press, 1995; reprint, 2011). He was the curator with Diller + Scofidio of an exhibition on The American Lawn. Surface of Everyday Life, at the Canadian Center for Architecture (Montréal, 1998), and the editor of a volume on The American Lawn (New York: Princeton Architectural Press, 1999). More recently, the University of Coimbra has translated and published an anthology of his essays in Portuguese: Da teoria de Arquitectura: doze ensaios (Lisbon, Edições 70, 2010). Also he has published a book on Walter Benjamin. Les maisons oniriques, (Paris: Hermann, 2013); and a volume entitled A Topology of Everyday Constellations, in the “Writing Architecture Series”, (Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press, 2013), of which he has edited the French version: Une topologie du quotidien, (Lausanne, CH: PPUR, Presses polytechniques et universitaires romandes, 2016); and Alfred Neumann, L'architecture de la morphologie, Georges Teyssot, Samuel Bernier-Lavigne, ed., Paris, éditions B2, 2020.
