The Georgian Medical Journal (GMJ; Georgian: საქართველოს სამედიცინო ჟურნალი) is an open-access, peer-reviewed academic journal covering medicine and public health. It is published by the Public Health Institute of Georgia (PHIG) and is based in Tbilisi, Georgia.[1]
History
The Georgian Medical Journal was established by the Public Health Institute of Georgia and launched on 5 January 2025, with the first issue published in 2026.[2] It was founded to strengthen scientific publishing infrastructure in Georgia and to provide a standards-compliant academic platform for Georgian and international medical research.
In May 2026, the journal was added to the ETH Zurich Library catalogue and the swisscovery national library network of Switzerland, making its content accessible to researchers across 475 Swiss academic institutions.[3]
Scope
GMJ publishes original research, systematic reviews, case reports, brief reports, editorials, viewpoints, commentaries, and practice guidelines across:
- Clinical and surgical sciences
- Public and international health
- Epidemiology and biostatistics
- Health systems research
- Healthcare quality, accreditation, and patient safety
- Medical education and bioethics
- Health management and policy
GMJ accepts submissions in English and Georgian. All content is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence.[4]
Editorial governance
GMJ maintains editorial independence from its publisher and operates in accordance with the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). All research manuscripts undergo double-anonymised peer review by at least two independent reviewers.[5]
The Editor-in-Chief is Giorgi Pkhakadze from David Tvildiani Medical University (DTMU) in Tbilisi, who is also the Chair of the Public Health Institute of Georgia.[6]

Publisher
The Georgian Medical Journal is published by the Public Health Institute of Georgia (PHIG; Georgian: საქართველოს საზოგადოებრივი ჯანდაცვის ინსტიტუტი), a non-profit research and policy institute established in 2011 and headquartered in Tbilisi, Georgia.[12] PHIG operates as a local partner of Accreditation Canada for healthcare accreditation in Georgia and is a founding organisation of Accréditation Sans Frontières (ASF).[13] PHIG also publishes the SheniEkimi medical media platform (sheniekimi.ge).
