Social Development Issues (SDI) is a peer-reviewed international journal published three times annually—in February, July, and November—by Michigan Publishing the publishing division of the University of Michigan Library. Established in 1977, it is the official journal of the International Consortium for Social Development (ICSD) and provides a scholarly forum for interdisciplinary dialogue across nations and cultures, focusing on social, cultural, political, and economic issues impacting social development and social justice globally.[1]

History

First issued in 1977 under the auspices of the Inter-University Consortium for International Social Development (IUCISD), SDI has been in continuous publication since then. [2] It was originally produced at the University of Iowa School of Social Work in cooperation with Southern Illinois University–Carbondale.[3]

Scope and editorial focus

The journal publishes research on social, cultural, political, and economic theory, policy, and practice, particularly in the realm of social justice, community well-being, participatory action, locality development, and social change. It welcomes scholarly works that explore the interconnections between these themes within a global context.[1]

As an open-access journal, all articles are freely available online for reading and downloading. As of 2024, the journal had published 46 volumes. [1]

Editorial structure and sponsorship

SDI is published under the aegis of the International Consortium for Social Development (ICSD). As of 2024, the journal features a themed issue marking ICSD’s 50th anniversary, showcasing a range of global scholarship and reflections on the consortium’s legacy.[4]
