Geotastic is a free-to-play crowdfunding geography game available on the web and developed by Eduard But, a German web designer and front-end developer, released on October 19, 2020.[1][2]
Gameplay[edit]
The game uses a semi-randomized Google Street View location and survives on donations from players, who gain some extra functions when they donate, it has singleplayer and multiplayer, in addition to 5 different game modes: Random Drop, Country Battle Royale, Popular Landmarks, Fun with Flags and Satellite City Pinpointing.[3][4][5] The main objective of the game is for players to guess their location in the world using only the visible clues.[6]
Development[edit]
In July 2021 the game had approximately 145,000 registered users, reaching its peak of popularity until that moment[7] and establishing a monthly average greater than 400,000 visits[8], in October a charity event in celebration of the first anniversary of the game managed to raise more than a thousand euros in donations to Amazon reforestation and animal protection institutions[9], in November it was one of the official games of an eSport event promoted by the German city of Wiesbaden[10], in December the game reached more than 6,000 hours of lives on Twitch and around 2,600 users in the official Discord community, in addition to its first partnership with wetter.de, a meteorology company belonging to the RTL Group.
In February 2022 the game gained the "State Streak" mode, which consists of guessing the location by selecting the correct province, initially this mode was limited to only a few countries, in March was launched "Instinct Pinpointing Duel" multiplayer mode, in April the "Satellite City Pinpointing" mode, which consists of guessing the location from satellite images and the "Community Map", in May advertisements were added to Geotastic in order to reduce overall costs of the Google Street View API in the development of the game and was part of a Rocket Beans TV event[11], in June the game surpassed 400,000 registered accounts, and in October, on the two-year anniversary of the game, another charity event took place, again raising thousand euros in donations to the "Viva con Agua" project[12], in addition to the launch of Highscore Hunt mode, new Elo's and anti-cheat methods in the online mode.
