Gerasimos Floratos

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Gerasimos Floratos (born 1986) is an American contemporary artist based in New York City. Known for his expressive and surreal figurative paintings, Floratos draws from his upbringing in Times Square to create works that explore themes of urban life, cultural identity, and psychological landscapes. His work has been exhibited internationally and is recognised for its distinctive use of exaggerated figures and vibrant, cartoon-like imagery.

Early life

Floratos was born in 1986 and raised in Times Square, Manhattan. He is of Greek descent. This urban environment significantly influenced his visual language and continues to serve as a recurring theme in his artwork.

Career

Floratos began exhibiting internationally in the mid-2010s. His paintings often feature anthropomorphic characters with oversized hands and feet, distorted features, and dreamlike environments that reflect his interest in mapping psychological states onto urban spaces – a style sometimes described as "psycho-geographic".

His early solo exhibitions garnered attention for their raw and gestural style, and he has since developed a consistent body of work across painting, drawing and installation. Floratos is represented by galleries such as Pilar Corrias (London), Almine Rech (Paris/Brussels) and Eleni Koroneou Gallery (Athens).

Style and themes

Floratos’s work is deeply tied to the cultural fabric of New York City. His recurring motifs often reflect the overstimulation of urban life, using distorted anatomy and vibrant colour to communicate emotional and social tension. His self-styled "subway psychology" blends personal biography with broader urban archetypes.
