The rivalry between Germany and Spain (German: Fußballrivalität zwischen Deutschland und Spanien, Spanish: Rivalidad futbolística entre Alemania y España) is one of the biggest and most heated association football rivalries in Europe between two of the world's most successful football nations.
History[edit]
Germany and Spain first met each other in 1935, during a friendly trip by the Spanish national team to Cologne. The first friendly between two national teams was held in the same city on 12 May 1935, which the German hosts suffered its only home defeat to Spain so far, a 2–1 defeat.[1] Since then, Spain has faced Germany in numerous occasions and often these games have produced many dramatic outcomes, often in favour to the Germans, although it has largely changed since the 21st century with the rise of Tiki-taka and Spain's growing football power.[2] Germany has maintained a slight domination in the head-to-head record with 9 wins, 9 draws and 8 losses. However, Germany has never lost to Spain at home soil since the only defeat in 1935 and has managed to defeat Spain thrice away, including in one competitive fixture; while Spain is the holder to the largest head-to-head victory so far, a 6–0 rout of Germany in the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League A.[3][4]
