Gero Erhardt (2015)

Gero Erhardt (17 February 1943 – 23 September 2021) was a German film director, screenwriter, camera operator and film producer.

Career[edit]

In 1966 and 1967, he worked as a camera assistant in the comedy How I Learned to Love Women and the crime film When Night Falls on the Reeperbahn. In the 1970s he worked as a camera operator for various television series and television films, such as Der Fall von nebenan from 1970 to 1975 and Tadellöser & Wolff (1975) based on the novel of the same name by Walter Kempowski. In 1971 and 1977, he worked as a camera operator for episodes of the television series Tatort.

In 1973, he had his only appearance in front of the camera as an actor in the television film Der Ziegelbrenner, based on a novel by Horst Bosetzky. A year later, he was back behind the camera in the television thriller Der Springteufel.

From 1978 to 1979, Gero Erhardt worked with his father Heinz Erhardt on the television version of his comic opera Noch ’ne Oper, which was written in the 1930s. In 1979, the year Heinz Erhardt died, this TV version was broadcast by German television station ZDF, with an all-star cast including cameos by Heinz Rühmann, Gert Fröbe and Loriot. Gero Erhardt acted as camera operator in this production; as his father could no longer speak because of a stroke, his voice from previous radio recordings was added.

Gero Erhardt continued to work as a camera operator until 1984 (including 1979 in the ZDF television film Luftwaffenhelfer, in the Derrick episode Der Kanal in 1981 and six episodes from Das Traumschiff from 1983 to 1984) until he directed the comedy Eine etwas sonderbare Dame with Lilli Palmer. Since then, he has worked exclusively as a director with his wife, Jutta Erhardt.
