Gerry-Jenn Wilson
Gerry Jenn Wilson was a Canadian punk rock singer and guitarist who gained notoriety with the band JP5.
Wilson was born in Winnipeg in 1970 to provincial politician Robert Wilson and she attended Lord Kelvin Secondary School. Developing a taste for rock and roll she formed a psychedelic revival group named the Hypnotic Wail and it gigged around for a few years. She then moved west to Vancouver in 1988 to become a part of the thriving local punk rock scene. She played with the 60s garage-esque group the Cane Toads, further establishing herself.
In 1995 she made the aptly named high-energy punk band JP5—named for Jet Propellant Class 5—and she took off. She became known for her engaging performances, stage antics, and charisma. The band played in Downtown Eastside skid road bars. Later the band toured both Canada and America. The CD Hot Box was released in 1999 on band D.O.A.'s house label and featured the song “Beer Drinking Maneaters.”
Wilson later formed other groups including the East Vamps, Spank Machine, and Lil Guitar Army. There is a film cameo of Wilson in the Vancouver punk rock documentary Bloodied But Unbowed.
She was tragically killed in a house fire in March 2021. Wilson was writing an autobiography of her life in the punk rock music business when she died.
