Early Career[edit]

Ghani Jafar began his career as a lawyer. In 1976 he got enrolled at Rawalpindi Bar but after a short stint got an offer from the Iranian Air Force Language School[5] in Teheran to teach English. He began teaching English to Iranian military officers and at the same time worked part-time for daily Kayhan International. This was the time when the Iranian Revolution[6] overthrew the Reza Shah Pahlavi's monarchy in 1979. Ghani witnessed all the phases of the Revolution. On his return to Pakistan he joined a popular English language daily, The Muslim, as a reporter. But soon moved on to the newsdesk and became the City Editor. The Muslim's City Page gained popularity for outspoken articles like the City Diary and the Last Column.

STOP PRESS: Those were challenging times for independent journalists like Ghani Jafar. The authoritarian regime of late General Ziaul Haq[7] placed a censorship on the press and all pages of newspapers had to be "approved" by the Deputy Commissioner.[8] The DC ripped off the articles he didn't like and those pages had to be replenished by more compliant articles by the editors. But Ghani Jafar refused to re-paste more compliant articles and instead left those places blank with "STOP PRESS" slammed on them in bold fonts. This act of defiance sent a shrilling message to the military regime and it stopped taking off articles from newspaper pages.

Ghani Jafar is one of the best known English journalists in Pakistan but his rebellious nature brought him face to face with the media owners and the Pakistani state. Despite his capabilities as a journalist and his scope of knowledge, he was not given the status he deserved. Many journalists believe that was the reason he left journalism and went into academic research.

Ghani Jafar moved on to Institute of Regional Studies[9] or IRS where he worked as Research Analyst for five years. He jumped back into journalism joining Pakistan Observer[10] as Deputy Editor. After working as Diplomatic Correspondent for The National Press Trust he rejoined The Muslim in 1989 as Executive Editor and two years later as Editor of an outspoken weekly, Pulse[11].

Ghani Jafar went back to his research projects at the Institute of Regional Studies and stayed there for ten years except for early two years at the Institute of Strategic Studies (ISS). In 2007 he left for more research work at South Asian Strategic Stability Institute (SAASI) in London as Senior Visiting Fellow and Editor. But a year later he rejoined the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad as Director-Editor.
