Ghost Legend (麻衣傳奇 ) is a 1990 Hong Kong action comedy horror film directed by Min Kan Ng, and it stars Kent Cheng, Kenny Ho, Kok Keong Cheong, Joan Tong, Eva Lai Yin-shan and Peter Chan Lung as the Earthly Ghost King.

Plot[edit]

The film begins two hundred years back in time, sacrificial bride Yan Hong, an orphan was sent away and to be wed to the Earthly Ghost King as an appeasement by the local villagers in hopes of avoiding ghostly wraths upon their village.

The entourage and escorts were attacked by the Earthly Ghost King, whom requires the life essences of virgin maidens to sustain its life force and power to remain on earth resulted in the death of Yan by having her life force drained, leaving only her dried up corpse. Meanwhile, an elderly but highly experienced Taoist Priest of the Linen Sect, sensed the Earthly Ghost King's evil presence hand written his final Will with his own blood in hopes of passing down his demon slaying legacy, reminding his future successors about their duty to expand their services to combat evil should any malevolent presences arise in time. Armed with the Demon Slaying Blade, an ensuing battle with the Ghost King occurred at the forest and despite having destroyed it physically by cutting out its still beating heart (which later burrowed itself underneath), the Ghost King also deceptively and mortally wounds the Priest, whom succumbed to his injury and dies.

Two hundred years have passed, bumbling Taoist priests, Chor Yat and Shi Wu the direct descendants of the Linen Sect; are living a laid back life due to the declining beliefs of superstition and they both befriended Bien the village's benevolent physician and his tomboyish but adorable younger sister Fu Rong. One day, Bien fell off hill and discovered a set of bones (Yan Hong's) in shock while searching for medicinal herbs and accidentally cuts his palm. In his collectible was a special plant (unbeknownst to him was the dormant heart of the Earthly Ghost King). His blood was assimilated by both the bones and the heart. Upon autopsied the bones to which he believes to be of a female's, he then buried them and pays his respect before leaving for home. His basket was knocked down by playing children near the village and the heart rolled down a drain without anybody's knowledge. While tending to his wound in his studies, Bien fell asleep and had a dream (which was in fact real) visited by the grateful benign spirit of Yan Hong who then makes love to him. On that very same night, the blood of a virgin (a newborn baby girl) revives the Earthly Ghost King. It then murdered newborn baby girl and another victim being Fu Rong's best friend Xiao Kuen.

The demon's presence alerted Chor Yat and Shi Wu, leading them to coincidentally believing that it was Yan Hong's cause since her spiritual presence confuses and leading the duo to believe she was the Ghost King. A frightened Bien resumed his intimacy and romance with Yan after she explained to him that his blood bound her spirit with his, thus making her his servant and companion. After a brief pursued by the two Taoist priests which Bien protected Yan and buying long enough time for her to escape, they were led to the same forest where Yan Hong first fell victim to the Earthly Ghost King who at the same time, killed and assimilated three more virgin females' life essences. A fierce fight ensued, but despite their combined efforts and determination, the more powerful and experienced Earthly Ghost King gained the upper hand before being frightened away by a clucking sound of a rooster, falsely thinking it was the sunrise but was actually Fu Rong's imitation behind the bushes.

After believing that Yan Hong is a benign spirit, the group gathered at the Linen Altar where Yan Hong explained the situation which had started two hundred years ago, that the only way to destroy the evil completely is to first destroy its heart before it can resume absorbing forty nine virgin females'life force which will ultimately grant it immortality and destructive power.

After a heartbroken separation between the tearful Bien and Yan Hong, whom the latter were sent to be reincarnated as a human in the next life, he joined Chor Yat, Shi Wu and Fu Rong in a plan to attract the Earthly Ghost King by luring it into the confined strategic planes of the Linen Altar. Since Fu Rong is still a virgin and being the evil's final piece of the puzzle to invincibility, she was then used as a bait for the plan to lure the demon out from its hiding.

The plan succeeded, but the team suffered heavy injuries during the fierce battle. When all hope seemed lost, Chor Yat then reappears with his newly invented "Divine Cinnabar Demon Destroyer" gun, took a clear aim and finally blasted the Ghost King into bits.

Before the credit rolls, the four of them were seen walking closely the now flame damaged inner section of the Altar, inspecting the fallen debris and the remains of the Earthly Ghost King as the still beating heart of the creature was never revealed to the heroes with the camera switches angle to the viewer, concluding the segment with a room for guessing.

Cast[edit]

Kent Cheng as Chor Yat/Day One (The Inventor)(初一)- A bumbling, but righteous Taoist Priest and Senior brother to Shi Wu/Day Fifteen. He is the current successor and senior holder of the Linen Sect Altar of Tao who is passionate with his new and creative methods and inventions of exorcism with one being a medieval howitzer gun which he named it the "Holy Cinnabar Demon Destroyer Cannon" that had slain the Earthly Ghost King during their final battle.

Kenny Ho as Shi Wu/Day Fifteen (The Sidekick)(十五)- The bumbling but good looking younger brother of Chor Yat who is also a Taoist Priest and one of the two successors of the Linen Sect Altar. He is generally a better martial artist and fighter than his older brother and often relies on his acrobatic agility, acting as a support for his brother. He is also the love interest of Fu Rong.

Cheung Kwok Keung [zh] as Bien (The Good Doctor) (卞醫師)- He is the village's well known and respected Physician who would go all his way out just to save as many lives as he can, even without accepting any payment, especially from poor and unaffordable patients. His kind hearted nature often gets himself at odds with his younger sister Fu Rong and friends Chor Yat and Shi Wu who are more realistic in their approach in dealing with situations involving street smarts. He unknowingly had the beautiful but benign spirit of Yan Hong bound with his after having her scattered bones assimilated his blood through an accidental hand cut, thus bonding them together as brief but romantic (human-spirit) lovers.

Joan Tong as Fu Rong (The Feisty)(芙蓉) - She is the younger sister of the Physician Bien. She is headstrong and determined but more often than not, she gets easily frightened and would immediately faint by horrific situations wherever there is a scene of murder which involves mutilated dead bodies. Despite her gender and petite stature, she is fiercely feisty, loyal and intelligently helpful especially during times of peril. She is also the love interest of Shi Wu.

Eva Lai Yin-Shan as Yan Hong (The Wandering Spirit)(嫣紅)- She was once a young woman being ritually sacrificed to the Earthly Ghost King by her villages resulted in her tragic death. After her shattered bones were pieced together by the good doctor Bien and at the same time, having assimilated his blood, she was brought back to the mortal world as a wandering spirit bound to him and would go great lengths to be his ghostly servant in order to repay his deed. She eventually became the important key figure in the understanding of the destructive power of the Earthly Ghost King, thus helping her friends in their plans to defeat the great evil. She and Bien were briefly involved in an intimate romance before her reincarnation to the next life, resulting in a heartbroken separation.

Wu Ma as Priest of Linen Sect Altar (The Fallen Grandmaster) (麻衣老祖)- A direct ancestor to Chor Yat and Shi Wu, whom was the Holder of the Linen Sect Altar two hundred years prior to his bumbling successors' time. He was highly regarded as the experienced and exceptional Taoist Exorcist/Demon Slayer of his time. By the time of Yan Hong's death, he arrived too late to her rescue and he fought fiercely in a battle against the Earthly Ghost King and defeated the greater evil but at the cost of his own life.

Peter Chan Lung as Earthly Ghost King (The Great Evil) (地藏鬼王)- The main villain and antagonist of the film, whom, once having absorbed the flesh and life force of forty nine virgin females can become an unstoppable force of mortal destruction. It was unclear whether it was a supernatural being or merely a superhuman, but from his ability to maneuver the Earthly powers it possesses such as gravitational defiance and flight, one would assume it was a being from another dimension.
