Tricycle Thief is an 18 minute short film written, directed and produced by Max Bessmertny. It was the first 'made in Macao' film to World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014[1] and won the 2015 Kodak Gold Award.[2]
Synopsis
After discovering his eviction notice, a rickshaw driver goes on a desperate hunt for money in night-time Macau.[3]
Production
The film was Max's second year short film assignment for New York University's Tisch Asia MFA program in film directing.
Max brought an international crew of fellow students from Tisch Asia to shoot the film in Macau. It was shot over 7 nights between December 2013 and January 2014.
Reception
The short film was very well received by Toronto International Film Festival and audiences worldwide. It gave lead actor Leung King Ping a renaissance in his career. Specific praise went to the pacing of the film, the performance of the lead actor and the cinematography. C.J. Prince from Way Too Indie commented "What struck my fancy the most with Tricycle Thief is the cinematography from Jordan Lavi Quellman (no doubt channeling some Wong Kar-Wai and Ming-liang Tsai imagery,) complimenting Bessmertny's controlled pace so well. It makes for an absorbing watch, and the way that finale plays out with the wife, the sarcastic chuckle, and that music; it’s a positive sign that Max Bessmertny has a bright future ahead of him in the arthouse field of cinema if he keeps this up."[4]
