Gianni Di Pillo (born 1942 in Rome, Italy)[1] is an Italian applied mathematician and professor emeritus at the University of Rome La Sapienza,[2] known for his research in systems theory, mathematical optimization, nonlinear programming theory and operations research.[3] He has developed the basis of bilinear control systems and has advanced the theory and algorithms of nonlinear constrained optimization.[4]
Di Pillo has served as associate editor of the Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, Computational Optimization and Applications, Journal of Global Optimization, Journal of Industrial and Management Optimization, Optimization Letters, and 4OR: Journal of Operations Research.[5]
Academic career
Gianni Di Pillo began his academic career in Italy, holding faculty positions at the University of Calabria and the University of Salerno before joining the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. In 1981, he was appointed full professor of Optimization in the Department of Computer, Control and Management Engineering at La Sapienza, where he taught and conducted research for over three decades.[1]
In 1994, he was elected Director of the Department of Computer, Control and Management Engineering, a leading institution in Italy, and served in that role until 2006. Under his leadership, the department strengthened its research group in mathematical optimization and expanded both basic and advanced teaching courses in optimization and operation research.[5]
Di Pillo was from 1984 to 2010 the principal investigator of multiple Italian national research programs in optimization theory and algorithms, bringing together research teams from universities across Italy. Di Pillo played a central role in establishing the international Workshop on Nonlinear Optimization, held triennially at the International School of Mathematics “G. Stampacchia” in Erice, Italy, from 1995 through 2013. The workshops gathered eminent optimization researchers from around the world and fostered collaboration across European and global research communities. He edited the proceedings of all these workshops, published by major academic presses such as Plenum Press, Kluwer Academic Publishers, and Springer.[5]
Di Pillo has served on the editorial boards of several international journals in the field of optimization, including the Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, Computational Optimization and Applications, Journal of Global Optimization, Journal of Industrial and Management Optimization, Optimization Letters, and 4OR: Journal of Operations Research.
In recognition of his significant contributions to research and education in mathematical optimization, he has been awarded honorary lifetime membership by AIRO, the Italian Association of Operations Research.
Research
Di Pillo’s research activity has dealt mainly with methodological subjects in System Theory and Mathematical Optimization.[3] As concerns System Theory, his early contributions to the analysis and control of bilinear control systems are main references on the subject.[4]
As concerns Optimization, his research interests focuses mainly on nonlinear programming theory and algorithms. His work on exact penalty functions and augmented Lagrangian methods introduced systematic approaches to transform constrained optimization problems into unconstrained ones, enabling more efficient solution techniques.[6] He also developed smooth methods for nonsmooth minimax problems, globally convergent algorithms with superlinear convergence properties, and optimization techniques for computationally expensive objective functions.[7] His methodologies have been applied across a wide range of fields, such as water resources management, management of steam power systems, astrophysical parameter estimation, sales forecasting, cruise itinerary optimization, microelectronic device design. He co-authored more than 100 publications, in international journals, books, and edited conference proceedings.[5]
