Jacopo De Simoi (born September 20, 1981) is an Italian-Canadian mathematician and Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Toronto Mississauga. He is known for his work in dynamical systems, ergodic theory, and mathematical physics.

Early life and education

De Simoi was born on September 20, 1981, in Italy.[citation needed] He is a native Italian speaker and is also fluent in English and French.

De Simoi received his early education in Italy, earning both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Physics from the University of Pisa in 2003 and 2005 respectively, both cum laude. He also obtained a Diploma di Licenza in Physics from the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa in 2005, cum laude.[citation needed]

He completed his Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Maryland, College Park in 2009 under the supervision of Professor Dmitry Dolgopyat. His doctoral thesis was titled "Abundance of escaping orbits in a family of anti-integrable limits of the Standard Map."[1]

Career

Academic positions

De Simoi began his academic career with several postdoctoral positions:

He then joined the faculty at University of Toronto Mississauga, progressing through the academic ranks:[citation needed]

  • 2016-2021: Assistant Professor

  • 2023-present: Professor

He also held a brief appointment as Maître de conférences at Paris Diderot University (Paris 7) from January to June 2016.[citation needed]

Editorial work

De Simoi serves on the editorial boards of several prestigious mathematics journals:

Awards and honors

In 2020, De Simoi was awarded the Coxeter–James Prize by the Canadian Mathematical Society, recognizing outstanding research achievement by a young Canadian mathematician.[3]

He also received the Michael Brin Prize in Dynamical Systems in 2023.[4]

Research

De Simoi's research focuses on dynamical systems, ergodic theory, and their applications to mathematical physics.[citation needed] His work spans topics including:

He has been an active participant in the international mathematics community, attending and presenting at numerous conferences and workshops worldwide, including events at prestigious institutions such as the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, Centre international de rencontres mathématiques, Fields Institute, and the Erwin Schrödinger International Institute for Mathematics and Physics.[citation needed]

Other

Outside of mathematics, De Simoi is an accomplished violinist, having achieved a Conservatory Diploma in 2005 after studying violin since 1990. He was a founding member of the Youth University Orchestra in Pisa and is a member of the Corktown Chamber Orchestra in Toronto.[5]
